A couple were so saddened by the number of stray disabled dogs they encountered while travelling around Europe, they started a charity to help, building special wheelchairs for pets in need. Alongside their regular jobs, graphic designer Cassie Carney, 40, and her marketing executive husband, Tim, 50, run Broken Biscuits, a charity providing essential equipment - such as the special wheelchairs - for disabled rescue dogs. “These animals are like the biscuits left on the plate - they may look different, but inside they are just the same. And there’s no reason that they can’t be as wonderful pets as others,” Cassie said. The couple are the proud owners of a three-legged cat, a deaf Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a mixed breed triple amputee pooch, Otto, who uses a wheelchair. Originally from Australia, Tim met Cassie in New Zealand, where she was working for a small charity that rescued chimpanzees from the circus. Seven years ago, the … [Read more...] about Couple Spend Spare Time Building Wheelchairs For Disabled Rescue Dogs

A Romanian rescue dog who sparked a huge hunt when she went missing after just a day with her new family in Woodville has been found safe and well. Martha, the Labrador and collie cross breed had been rescued from the streets of Romania and brought to the UK. But she managed to escape from her new home, leading to lots of people getting involved in the search. She was spotted many times during the five days she was missing but, as she is timid, people could not catch her. Martha had only been with her new family for 24 hours when she managed to sneak out the front door before going on the run, leaving the young family heartbroken. They put a plea out of Facebook in a bid to find her, with people from Swadlincote and Woodville and beyond going out and looking for her. She was finally found in the early hours of Saturday morning, March 24, by a group of young people. Her owner Ben Sherriff told the Burton Mail that Martha had managed to sneak out of the house while his partner, Jenni … [Read more...] about Missing Romanian rescue dog Martha is found after five days
THE oldest rescue dog that a charity has ever looked after has finally found a home. Dogs Trust Merseyside had been searching for someone to find 20-year-old West Highland Terrier Snowy a new home after his owner became ill. Snowy, who is 140 in human years, is the oldest dog the national charity has ever looked after. But after searching, they found him the "perfect new owner" and he has now settled in his new home with Margaret Miller. Margaret, who lives in Wigan, said: “He is lovely and is doing really well. He is partially sighted but has soon found his feet and knows his way around. "Most of the time he just likes to potter about but he definitely livens up when it’s time for food. "His age hasn’t affected his appetite and he’s quick off the mark when the bowls go down which is great! "Before Snowy arrived my oldest dog was my 16-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Ben. "They get on very well and Snowy has fitted in wonderfully. "It is like a … [Read more...] about How 20-year-old rescue dog Snowy finally found a new home
A TRAINEE search and rescue dog named Kaiya helped launch English Tourism Week (March 17-25) in the Eden Valley and North Pennines. Special guests at the launch held at Kirkby Stephen’s Mountain Rescue Team (KSMRT) base, watched a demonstration of how search and rescue dogs like Kaiya play a vital role in rescuing walkers who get into difficulties. The launch was attended by VisitEngland’s Head of Programmes, William Smart, and local accommodation providers and transport operators. During the event, organised by Eden District Council’s Tourism Team in association with the mountain rescue team, guests had the opportunity to look round the KSMRT base, where displays had been put up highlighting walking opportunities that exist for both visitors and local people. Walking is one of Eden’s most popular pastimes with visitors and locals enjoying both low level and fell walking through the area’s inspiring landscape or trails such as the Coast to Coast … [Read more...] about Search and rescue dog helps launch English Tourism Week in the Eden Valley and North Pennines.
Meet Kevin, the ex-rescue centre dog from whose life is being turned around as he trains to become a hero support dog. The yellow Labrador is in-training with the Sheffield-based national charity Support Dogs, after arriving from Dogs Trust last October. He’s only two years old but already Kevin has been on quite a journey. After his original owner was unable to care for him due to a change in their circumstances, the much loved dog was handed over to Dogs Trust so that he could find a new permanent home. It was only a matter of days after he’d arrive that staff at the rehoming centre recognised the wonderful pooch’s potential and teamed up with Support Dogs, who often train ex-rescue centre dogs to become life-changing assistance dogs. Kevin is now in training and well on the way to being a valued canine companion for one of Support Dogs’ clients. Support Dogs is a national charity, which provides assistance dogs for children with autism and adults … [Read more...] about Rescue dog’s life turned around thanks to Sheffield charity
