South Africa halts AstraZeneca vaccine rollout after research showed jab failed to stop mild cases of new mutant strain

· February 8, 2021 ·

SOUTH Africa has suspended its rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine after a study revealed the drug failed to stop some cases of a new mutant strain. A trial showed the jab provides only "minimal" protection against mild to moderate Covid-19 caused by the variant first detected in the virus-ravaged country - but it does help to stop the most serious infections. ???? Read our coronavirus liv e blog for the latest news & updates The news is seen as a setback in the global fight against the pandemic as many poorer nations are relying on the logistical advantages offered by the AstraZeneca shot. Africa's hardest-hit nation was due to start its campaign in the coming days with a million doses but the government decided to hold off in light of the trial conducted by the University of Witatersrand in Johannesburg. "It's a temporary issue...until we figure out these issues," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told reporters last night. Despite having documents to prove she had a negative test, there was no one to show it to, Ms Feinstein claims. She told the Daily Express: "I could have had Covid, they don't know where I am staying, they didn't ask. "As a country we're messing up. Why can a third-world country get it right and we can't?" Ms Feinstein, who is now self-isolating, added that she was "shocked" that it only took her 10 minutes to get through the airport control. EU’s South Africa Covid-variant hotspot goes into lockdown: No-one is allowed to leave Austria’s Tyrol without negative coronavirus test after hundreds fall ill

· February 9, 2021 ·

The EU's South Africa covid-variant hotspot Tyrol has gone into lockdown , with no one allowed to leave the Austrian region without a negative coronavirus test. Austria's leader announced the measure on Tuesday as authorities try to prevent the spread of a coronavirus variant first discovered in South Africa. Some 293 cases of the more contagious variant have been confirmed in Tyrol. More than 120 of those cases are currently active, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. Concentrated in the Schwaz district, east of Innsbruck, they represent he biggest known current outbreak of the variant in the European Union , authorities said. Officials in Tyrol (pictured) initially resisted restrictions, but on Monday drew up a list of measures that included more police checks on mask-wearing and social distancing, and a requirement for negative antigen tests before people can use cable cars and ski lifts Officials in Tyrol initially resisted restrictions, but on … [Read more...] about EU’s South Africa Covid-variant hotspot goes into lockdown: No-one is allowed to leave Austria’s Tyrol without negative coronavirus test after hundreds fall ill

Brits told ‘do not wait’ to get vaccine as South Africa variant ‘unlikely’ to take over in UK

· February 8, 2021 ·

Britons have been urged not to wait for a reformulated vaccine that may offer more protection against the South Africa variant of Covid-19, because the new mutation may not become "dominant" in the UK. Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van Tam said the UK's current 'dominant' strain is still the Kent variant identified before Christmas. And while he accepted current vaccines may not provide as much protection against mild and moderate illness from the South Africa variant, he urged the public to protect themselves from the "clear and present danger." He said: "Please don't delay if you're called. Take the advantage to protect yourself against the clear and present danger. Against the immediate threat." He said preliminary modelling of current vaccines on the South Africa variant "give me confidence that there is still likely to be a substantial effect of the current vaccines in terms of reducing serious illness even if infections are not as well prevented." He added: "To people who … [Read more...] about Brits told ‘do not wait’ to get vaccine as South Africa variant ‘unlikely’ to take over in UK

Booster jab by autumn: Second vaccine dose that will help tackle the South African variant of Covid-19 could be available later this year as experts work to tweak the Oxford vaccine after research showed it has ‘minimal’ effect on the mutant strain

· February 7, 2021 ·

A booster jab that will help tackle the South African variant of coronavirus should be ready by the autumn, scientists said yesterday. The promise of an improved formulation will be necessary because the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has a 'minimal' effect against the variant in reducing the number of cases, according to preliminary research. Government sources said last night that there was 'no indication' the easing of lockdown would be affected by the findings that the Oxford vaccine is less effective against the South African variant. Yesterday South Africa said it was suspending use of the AstraZeneca vaccine while scientists advise on the best way to proceed. Professor Sarah Gilbert, lead researcher in the Oxford team, said current vaccines 'have a reduction in efficacy against some of the variant viruses'. Professor Sarah Gilbert, lead researcher in the Oxford team, told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show that her team currently has 'a version with the South African spike sequence in the … [Read more...] about Booster jab by autumn: Second vaccine dose that will help tackle the South African variant of Covid-19 could be available later this year as experts work to tweak the Oxford vaccine after research showed it has ‘minimal’ effect on the mutant strain
