Despite anti-Trump GOP campaigns, Republicans shift to support re-election

August 17, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

While Republican-led anti-Trump campaigns have gained traction ahead of November, polling shows GOP supporters are shifting in favor of re-electing President Donald Trump . Efforts by groups such as The Lincoln Project and Republican Voters Against Trump have piled criticism on the incumbent, with him currently trailing Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the polls. Despite this, a CNN poll has shown the percentage of Republicans or Republican-leaning independents that said they might back Biden has halved since June. In previous survey results the figure among them was 8 percent, while it is down to four in the latest numbers, from a poll conducted among 1,108 adults from August 12 through 15. The movement in polling is concentrated among men, with them having been evenly split previously but since switching to support Trump more heavily, at 56 percent to 40 percent, CNN reported. Trump's support among conservatives has also risen, with 85 percent having … [Read more...] about Despite anti-Trump GOP campaigns, Republicans shift to support re-election

Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz compares Lincoln demanding Civil War troops be released to vote for him to Ukraine quid pro quo

January 29, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

Alan Dershowitz, a lawyer who is a member of President Donald Trump's impeachment defense team, told The View watchers Wednesday that Trump's "quid pro quo" deal with Ukraine was comparable to a strategy employed by Abraham Lincoln to win votes during the American Civil War. Dershowitz, a former professor at Harvard Law School who was also part of the team that represented O.J. Simpson in his famous murder trial, made the comparison after one of the hosts, Sunny Hostin, challenged him on his argument that Trump did not commit a crime by threatening to withhold aid from Ukraine. Dershowitz countered that the president has "complete authority" as chief executive to conduct foreign policy—including withholding funds from foreign countries as he sees fit. "You know, you have to go back in history," Dershowitz said. "Impeachment doesn't change since the time of the Constitution. Abraham Lincoln demanded that soldiers be released from battle in the Civil War to vote in Indiana for his … [Read more...] about Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz compares Lincoln demanding Civil War troops be released to vote for him to Ukraine quid pro quo

Lawyers urge appeals court overseeing 6 states to recognize a constitutional right to film police

May 18, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

U.S. government lawyers on Wednesday asked the appeals court overseeing four western and two midwestern states to recognize that the First Amendment guarantee of free speech gives people the right to film police as they do their work in public — a decision that would allow officers to be sued if they interfere with bystanders trying to record them. Six of the nation's 12 appeals courts have recognized that right, but the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals has not — and justices heard arguments in the case of a YouTube journalist and blogger who claimed that a suburban Denver officer blocked him from recording a 2019 traffic stop. Natasha Babazadeh, an attorney for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, urged a three-judge panel from the court to rule that filming police is a constitutional right and said there has been an increase in the number of lawsuits filed against police by people saying they could not record them in public. The appeals court has jurisdiction over … [Read more...] about Lawyers urge appeals court overseeing 6 states to recognize a constitutional right to film police

I’m A Woman And I Don’t Support The #MeToo Movement — Here’s Why | The Daily Wire

May 18, 2022 by www.dailywire.com

In June of 2020, a high school friend of mine publicly accused a former teacher of child sexual abuse. Her vicious string of social media posts had one goal: To destroy this man’s life. She claimed that during our senior year, this beloved drama teacher sexually groomed her, engaged in explicit Snapchat conversations with her, and invited her and other “young girls” over to his apartment for dinner and movies. Each of her accusations included other classmates and close friends, and, in the following weeks, those individuals eventually made the brave decision to stand up and share the truth: the claims made by this young woman were false, and they had the facts to prove it. Sadly, these types of false accusations were hardly rare throughout my young adult life. I grew up in the midst of the #MeToo Movement. A movement that taught us to believe all women — regardless of facts, logic, or behavioral history — and perpetuated the idea that modern men were inherently … [Read more...] about I’m A Woman And I Don’t Support The #MeToo Movement — Here’s Why | The Daily Wire

Employers ‘breaking the law’ on maternity rights, says attorney general

March 27, 2022 by news.sky.com

The Attorney General has called for a culture change around maternity rights, saying too many employers are breaching employment rules. Suella Braverman, who last year became the first ever cabinet minister to take maternity leave , said: "Unfortunately, employers are breaking the law, and we do need to change that culture. We do need to ensure that more employers provide support to women in the workplace." In an exclusive interview to mark Mothering Sunday, she told Sky's political editor Beth Rigby it was "pretty surreal" to call the prime minister and tell him she was pregnant and wanted to take maternity leave. Mrs Braverman said she was "daunted" by the prospect of making the call, but the prime minister's response was to say it was "great news" and that she should "take whatever time(she) needs", "we'll sort it out." But for the Attorney General to take up the prime minister's encouragement to go on paid maternity leave, a law had to be rushed through … [Read more...] about Employers ‘breaking the law’ on maternity rights, says attorney general

What the Primaries Reveal About the Future of Trumpism

May 18, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

F or all the talk about how Donald Trump’s endorsed candidates would fare in the Republican primaries this year, the results in this week’s races made clear: Whatever happens to Trump’s personal influence, Trumpism is consolidating its dominance of the GOP. The former president’s scorecard on Tuesday was mixed. Candidates he endorsed won the GOP nominations for governor in Pennsylvania and Senate in North Carolina, while his preferred choice for Idaho governor failed to topple the incumbent and his late intervention could not save troubled young Representative Madison Cawthorn in North Carolina. The Pennsylvania Republican Senate primary remains too close to call between the celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, Trump’s candidate, and David McCormick, whom Trump has criticized. Yet more revealing than what happened to the candidates Trump endorsed was how many candidates endorsed him . As in Republican primaries earlier this year, no top-tier contenders in any of Tuesday’s races ran on … [Read more...] about What the Primaries Reveal About the Future of Trumpism

Mayorkas pauses recently created Disinformation Governance Board, and executive director resigns

May 18, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is pausing the work of the recently created and heavily criticized Disinformation Governance Board and launching a review, according to senior DHS officials. The board's executive director, Nina Jankowicz, announced her resignation, Wednesday, following a barrage of personal and professional attacks. DHS officials expressed disappointment and outrage at the firestorm of fault-finding prompted by the establishment of the board, which was tasked with standardizing the handling of disinformation by agencies under DHS. "The reaction has been extreme," a senior DHS official told reporters in a briefing Wednesday. "There have been gross mischaracterizations of what the board's work would be." A DHS official said that Mayorkas recognized that denunciation of the board had become a distraction from the department's work, and "he couldn't allow that to happen." The department first unveiled the board in April but … [Read more...] about Mayorkas pauses recently created Disinformation Governance Board, and executive director resigns

Ex-cop pleads guilty to manslaughter in George Floyd’s death

May 18, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Former Minneapolis police officer Thomas Lane pleaded guilty on Wednesday to aiding and abetting manslaughter in George Floyd’s killing in 2020. As part of Wednesday’s plea deal, Lane agreed to a sentence of three years that will be served concurrently with his federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights. His federal sentence has not yet been set. Lane, along with ex-cops J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, was already convicted on federal counts of violating the civil rights of Floyd, the 46-year-old black man killed by their former colleague, Derek Chauvin. Chauvin was convicted of murder last year in Floyd’s death and pleaded guilty to a federal civil rights violation. He was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison in the state case, but has yet to be sentenced in the federal case. Attorneys for the fellow ex-cops were also in the courthouse Wednesday, but did not discuss plea deals for their clients, according to KARE 11. ‘Today my thoughts are once again … [Read more...] about Ex-cop pleads guilty to manslaughter in George Floyd’s death

Waiting for a Shutdown to End in Disaster

January 18, 2019 by www.theatlantic.com

As the longest government shutdown in American history lurches toward its fifth week, a grim but growing consensus has begun to emerge on Capitol Hill: There may be no way out of this mess until something disastrous happens. This is, of course, not a sentiment lawmakers are eager to share on the record. But in interviews this week with congressional staffers on both sides of the aisle (whom I granted anonymity in exchange for candor), I heard the same morbid idea expressed again and again. The basic theory—explained to me between weary sighs and defeated shrugs—goes like this: Washington is at an impasse that looks increasingly unbreakable. President Donald Trump is dug in; so is Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Democrats have public opinion on their side, but the president is focused on his conservative base. For a deal to shake loose in this environment, it may require a failure of government so dramatic, so shocking, as to galvanize public outrage and force the two parties back to the … [Read more...] about Waiting for a Shutdown to End in Disaster
