Legionnaires' disease is an infection of the lungs caused by legionella bacteria. Other, less serious conditions can be caused by the bacteria but legionnaires' is the most serious and, if left untreated, can prove fatal. The risks of complications from the disease increase with age but everyone is susceptible to the illness. So what is legionnaires' disease? What causes legionnaires'? The disease can be caught from bacteria in droplets of water. Common in natural bodies of water, the bacteria are usually low enough in number to cause no harm. However if conditions are right and the bacteria is able to grow, the risk of catching legionnaires' becomes higher. Warm conditions, such as those found in water heaters, air conditioners, evaporative condensers, spa pools and hot and cold water systems can all aid the growth of legionella. Reporting injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences
The Health and Safety Executive has spoken out following an incident on Friday which saw a piece of machinery fall on a man's head. The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire air ambulance was drafted in along with several resources from West Midlands Ambulance Service to treat the patient. Emergency services were called around 1.30pm to Gloucester Street in Spon End on Friday afternoon. However, although it was a piece of machinery that fell on his head, the incident is not being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). A spokesman for HSE said: "We’ve checked with our colleagues who have looked into this and can confirm that we have not been made aware, however if it is RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) reportable the dutyholder has 10 working day to notify HSE of the incident."
