EU members, locked in talks since the idea was suggested last week, have now agreed to voluntarily reduce 15% of gas use between August and March. "This was not a Mission Impossible!", tweeted the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency. However, the deal was watered down after previously not having exemptions. The EU has said its aim from the deal is to make savings and store gas ahead of winter, warning that Russia is "continuously using energy supplies as a weapon". UK to receive shipment of Australian gas next week
By Noor Nanji Published 15 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The UK is expected to take delivery of a shipment of gas all the way from Australia next week, as the pressure on European energy supplies grows. The liquid natural gas (LNG) is due to arrive on 22 August, according to commodities analysts Kpler. Australia doesn't usually sell gas this far afield, but European countries have been seeking alternatives to Russian gas following the invasion of Ukraine. The UK stopped importing gas from Russia in April. While the UK bought only a small fraction of its gas from Russia before the conflict began, the country is connected to the European gas network. Continental Europe is much more reliant on Russian gas, and deliveries via the Nordstream pipeline have already been curtailed. Queen Elizabeth ‘might die’ in October, claims ‘time traveller’
Queen Elizabeth, at age 96, has reportedly been struggling with recurring health and mobility issues, and now, in a rather crude joke, a self-styled ‘time traveller’ on TikTok has made startling claims about when she might pass away, reported International Business Times. According to a TikTok user named @timetraveler_2082, the long-reigning monarch may not have much longer to live, and while his comments are to be taken with a grain of salt, he says that she could die as early as this year in October. Claiming to be ‘from the future’ and on the video-sharing app to ‘warn people’ of future events, the user stated: “In 2023 Big Ben collapses due to an unexpected earthquake. In 2030 GTA 7 is released. Queen Elizabeth II went in 2022 October 4th.” While some may have found the joke funny, it is pertinent to note that royal enthusiasts have been worried about the Queen’s health for about a year now after she spent a night in the hospital last October. She has since missed quite a … [Read more...] about Queen Elizabeth ‘might die’ in October, claims ‘time traveller’

Multiple blasts, arson attacks hit restive Thai south
BANGKOK: Arson attacks and explosions hit more than a dozen locations in Thailand's restive deep south on Wednesday, injuring seven people, authorities said. Officials said most of the targeted sites were convenience stores in petrol stations, all located in the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. A low-level conflict has rumbled in Thailand's southernmost provinces since 2004, killing more than 7,000 people as militants in the Muslim-majority region battle for greater autonomy from the state. Seven people were slightly injured in the incidents, a statement from the military said, while police said they were gathering CCTV footage and other evidence. Authorities said the immediate motive for the wave of attacks was still unclear. Militants usually target symbols of the Thai state and its security forces. The coronavirus pandemic brought a lull in southern clashes between rebels and the military, but a six-day gun battle in October last year killed six people. The … [Read more...] about Multiple blasts, arson attacks hit restive Thai south
What Happens When Drill and the Justice System Clash in the Courtroom?
Photo-Illustration: Dakarai Akil; Photos: Getty Shortly after the deaths of two aspiring rappers earlier this year, New York City Mayor Eric Adams appeared to take a hard line against drill rap, stressing in a February speech that social media companies should pull the genre’s displays of gun violence from their apps, comparing the removal to Trump’s Twitter suspension. His words sparked backlash, as they not only seemed to toy with the idea of censorship but also evoked the language of authorities’ long-standing moral panic over music created by Black and brown artists. Adams, a former NYPD cop, walked back his comments following a meeting with several rappers — including Fivio Foreign and Maino — which he described as a “great conversation,” and claimed to have reassured performers that he didn’t want to ban drill outright. The city’s official tone on drill might have shifted, but the fact remains that the discourse amongst some authorities surrounding the subgenre seems … [Read more...] about What Happens When Drill and the Justice System Clash in the Courtroom?
Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’
Facebook users in Iraq are exploiting the platform's lack of Arabic and Kurdish-language moderation policies in order to purchase guns online, according to a report. The study by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has found that the sale of weapons in Iraq is "rife" in Facebook comment sections. Social media giants have long been accused of failing to effectively moderate harmful and dangerous content, particularly in regions such as the Middle East. Meta — the parent company of Facebook — has fewer resources to tackle content in various languages and dialects than in English. The lack of moderation in Arabic and Kurdish has created an open gun market on Facebook in Iraq, said Moustafa Ayad, the ISD Executive Director for Africa, Middle East & Asia. "It was relatively easy to find weapons for sale on comments sections of very large Facebook pages, pages with over 2 million followers," Ayad told Euronews. According to his research, some of the … [Read more...] about Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’
