Remain campaigners are lining-up a stalking horse candidate as they bid to oust Theresa May after next week’s Brexit vote. Pro-EU fanatics want a junior minister to challenge the Prime Minister if, as expected, she suffers a humiliating Commons defeat on her EU withdrawal plan. While they do not expect the candidate to beat Mrs May in any leadership contest, the PM’s opponents believe a candidate could further undermine her crumbling authority - potentially dealing a fatal blow to her premiership. They hope Mrs May would be so badly wounded that other challengers emerge, perhaps forcing her to quit. One name touted as a possible stalking horse by sources in the anti-Brexit battle is Business Minister Richard Harrington. But the 61-year-old MP for Watford denied the claims, adding: “ I fully support the Prime Minister and her deal.” Officials on the various anti-Brexit groups estimate up to 85 Conservative MPs are set to vote against the PM’s deal, … [Read more...] about Remain campaigners want a ‘stalking horse’ to challenge Theresa May
Remain campaign brexit
Ross Clark 6 November 2018 5:28 PM 6 November 2018 5:28 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp The rearguard Remain lobby, which has far from given up on its ambition to reverse the Brexit vote, has put much store in the alleged electoral malpractice of Aaron Banks and his Leave.EU campaign, as well as the actions of the now-defunct Cambridge Analytica. Along the way it has found the Electoral Commission and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) eager to investigate. There has, however, been a drawback to this strategy: it has invited examination of the Remain campaign’s own spending and use of personal data. Sure enough, a report published by the ICO today offers some possible dynamite. It reads: ‘During the course of our investigation, we obtained information that the Liberal Democrats had sold the personal data of its party members to BSiE [Britain Stronger in Europe] for approximately £100,000. In June and July … [Read more...] about Did the Lib Dems sell data to the Remain campaign?
REMAIN campaigners were facing a backlash last night over a sick poster mocking suicide at their march demanding a second EU Referendum. The official poster on a bus at Saturday’s protest read: “UK now in so much trouble government appointed Suicide Minister! Don’t top yourself. Demand People’s Vote.” Mental health groups and grieving loved ones of suicide victims condemned the stunt branding it”shameful”and “disgusting” yesterday. London Mayor Sadiq Khan and celebrity TV cook Delia Smith spoke at rally after the London march, compered by broadcasters Richard Bacon and Mariella Frostrup. Organisers claimed 670,000 anti-Brexiteers marched through central London from Park Lane to the Houses of Parliament. Leave Means Leave claimed up to 100,000 Brexiteers attended a counter-rally in Gateshead on Friday and thousands more attended another rally in Harrogate. Twitter fury erupted as pictures of the poster bearing a “Demand … [Read more...] about Remain campaigners slammed over poster mocking suicide at second EU Referendum march
A LEADING Labour politician has been revealed to be advising a Remainer campaign on how to delay Brexit and hold a second referendum to keep us in the EU. Richard Corbett, who sits on the party’s ruling executive and leads their group of MEPs in the European Parliament, is on the “advisory committee” for the People’s Vote. They have produced a paper, which launched this week, explicitly stating that when it comes to exiting the EU, “the die is not irrevocably cast, there is still time and, until the UK has left the EU, the Article 50 letter can be withdrawn”. Mr Corbett’s support for a second referendum adds weight to the idea Labour are set to back another referendum. A series of key figures have softened their stance in recent weeks, including Mr Corbyn himself, his Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and the Deputy Leader Tom Watson. Another who has said holding a second vote and disregarding the 17 million who backed Brexit two years ago is … [Read more...] about Leading Labour politician revealed to be advising Remainer campaign how to delay Brexit and hold second referendum to keep us in the EU
Sputnik: What do you make of Theresa May’s comments that the Chequers plan is the only way to stop the UK being carved up? Michael Swadling: I think that’s preposterous that a Prime Minister of Great Britain would ever suggest there is a possibility of the UK being carved up. She said it’s Chequers or no deal – I agree with here in the sense that it’s either we remain in the EU in name only in effect or we remain on WTO terms and that’s really what the choice facing us is. The Chequers plan is remaining in the EU in all but name and there is no no deal – we revert to WTO terms, we trade on the basis that we trade already today with some of our largest trading partners. I’m sure your listeners will realise that they can buy products in China, they can buy products in the United States, these are not countries in the EU. We trade perfectly … [Read more...] about Former ‘Leave’ Campaigner: Brexit Should Not Change Situation in Ireland At All
