COVID-19: Italy surpasses 100,000 coronavirus deaths a year after imposing world’s first national lockdown

· March 8, 2021 ·

Italy has surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths a year after it became the first country in the world to impose a national lockdown due to the pandemic. The Italian health ministry said 318 people had died in the last 24 hours on Monday, bringing the total to 100,103. The latest figures mean Italy has the second highest number of deaths in Europe after the UK's 124,566. Nearly 14,000 new positive cases were also recorded on Monday, as the number of people in intensive care units (ICUs) rose to 2,700 - 95 more than a day earlier. Italy's total virus cases surpassed three million last week, with a new surge powered by the highly contagious variant that was first identified in Britain towards the end of 2020. Advertisement More than a year has passed since the first Italian coronavirus death - 78-year-old retired roofer Antonio Trevisan, who died on 21 February 2020. Myanmar: Nun tries to protect protesters as at least two killed in city of Myitkyina

· March 8, 2021 ·

A nun in Myanmar told junta forces "you'll have to come through me" - moments before they opened fire on protesters. At least two people were confirmed dead in the city of Myitkyina on Monday following clashes with security forces. Sister Ann Roza Nu Tawng previously said she was prepared to die to save others after being filmed kneeling in front of armed police in the capital city of Kachin state. Some have called the scene, on 28 February, Myanmar 's "Tiananmen moment". Dressed in white robes and a dark habit, the 45-year-old was again photographed near protest lines in the city on Monday morning. Advertisement Other images show her kneeling in front of police, this time near the Catholic cathedral, as a senior nun looks on. Recounting the horrifying events of the morning, she told Sky News: "The first time I was pleading with the police not to beat, not to arrest, not to crack down on the protesters, because the protesters were not doing … [Read more...] about Myanmar: Nun tries to protect protesters as at least two killed in city of Myitkyina

Everyday sexism is real: I’ve been spat at, followed and assaulted since I was 14 – things need to change

· March 8, 2021 ·

WALKING down the pavement, my heart pounding, I tried to keep my eyes on the floor. A group of men on the opposite side of the street were leering and shouting at me, making hand gestures, exchanging loud comments about my developing breasts. I was 14, and it was one of my earliest experiences of street harassment. It was the first time I’d felt really unsafe because I was a girl, but it wouldn’t be the last. I’d go on to be followed home, chased and spat at. A man would later masturbate near me on the bus while he stared intensely into my horrified eyes, grinning. A senior colleague at my first ever holiday temp job would send me inappropriate emails. Eventually, I’d be sexually assaulted a number of times in my twenties. I’d go on to start a campaign against sexism , only to be deluged with hundreds of rape and death threats. Men would compete to come up with the most disgusting ideas, sending me messages about using pieces of furniture to give me internal … [Read more...] about Everyday sexism is real: I’ve been spat at, followed and assaulted since I was 14 – things need to change

US: Trial delayed in George Floyd case

· January 8, 2021 ·

On Monday, a US court postponed the start of the jury selection process in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd. Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, pressed his knee into Floyd's neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, resulting in the Black man's death. Chauvin is now charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. The trial was set to begin on Monday. However, the court put it on hold while considering adding a third-degree murder charge. The judge initially ruled that jury selection would begin as scheduled on Monday. He also said he did not have jurisdiction to decide whether to reinstate the additional charge. However, prosecutors said they would ask the Court of Appeals to intervene, which could put the case on hold. The judge then sent the potential jurors home for the day. How did George Floyd die? The killing prompted outrage across the US and the world. A video of the incident shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck as another … [Read more...] about US: Trial delayed in George Floyd case
