Germany is on the frontline of controversial debate that has put European governments in a quandary – whether to recognise child marriage. The dilemma is a legacy of Europe’s migration influx, which has seen more than a million refugees and migrants arrive in Germany over the last two years. Denmark and The Netherlands have also been grappling with the issue, which UNICEF claims can lead to a lifetime of deprivation and disadvantage, putting the child at greater risk of falling pregnant early, dropping out of school and being in a violent relationship. There were 1,475 married children living in Germany last summer, according to official figures , but some NGO s say this figure could be much higher. Terre Des Femmes ( TDF ) says around a quarter of the children were assumed to be under 14, with one, a 13-year-old pregnant girl, thought to have married at 11. A WOMAN whose neighbours complained about her fish pond has been left devastated after being told to fill it in. Audrey Whitebrook, 67, uses the garden feature in the shared space outside her rented flat in Tutbury, Staffs ., to help deal with her anxiety. She says her son built it for her from scratch, but as soon as it was finished, the neighbours started to complain. European nationals are among hundreds of hostages seized by the Islamic State militant group in Syria, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Speaking in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Thursday, Putin said 700 hostages, including US and European nationals, were seized in part of Syria controlled by US-backed forces, and that there had been an ultimatum promising to execute 10 people every day. He did not specify what the militants' demands were. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the UK-based SOHR, told Euronews that the number of hostages was actually around 300. He said they were taken last week from a camp near the city of Hajin, east of Deir el-Zour, and were brought to territory controlled by the militant group. “The Islamic State was controlling the camp for three hours and took the people hostage from the camp to inside the ISIS area,” he said. “Inside the camp some people who were refugees … [Read more...] about Europeans among hundreds of Islamic State hostages seized in Syria
