Boris Johnson: Resignations exceed 50 but PM stays in post
By Andre Rhoden-Paul & Dulcie Lee Published 7 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Boris Johnson remains as prime minister despite his two most recent cabinet appointments calling for him to resign. Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who was given the job two days ago, said the situation was "not sustainable and will only get worse". And Education Secretary Michelle Donelan quit, saying Mr Johnson had "put us in an impossible situation". But Mr Johnson insists he has a "colossal mandate to keep going". The wave of resignations from the government and party exceeded 50 on Thursday, as Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis became the first cabinet member of the day to quit, quickly followed by seven other ministers. Previously loyal supporters - including Priti Patel and Grant Shapps - urged him to step down on Wednesday. Boris Johnson, Brexit and the Northern Ireland Protocol
By John Campbell Published 7 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Boris Johnson rose to the highest ranks of UK politics on the back of Brexit. He was the face of the campaign group Vote Leave and in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum the new prime minister Theresa May made him foreign secretary. Within three years, he had deposed her for taking an insufficiently hard line on Brexit. He then fought and won an election on the promise that he would "get Brexit done". He did deliver a Brexit deal with the EU but the treatment of Northern Ireland remains unfinished business, which has poisoned several sets of political relationships. How did Mr Johnson's position on Northern Ireland and Brexit evolve? These green targets waved through by MPs will make the cost of no deal look like small change
This legislation was approved with little scrutiny, all to boost the ego of one of Britain’s worst prime ministers Never let it be said that Parliament cannot get things done when it wants to. In the three years since the referendum, MPs have not only rejected Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement but have failed to produce a majority for every other conceivable plan to exit the European Union. Those who never wanted Brexit in the first place say that it will cost the country billions. Britain is too small and insignificant to stand alone, they say. Nobody voted to be poorer, they say. Contrast this parliamentary rigor mortis with the passage of the Climate Change Act 2008 (2050 Target Amendment) Order which was nodded through on Monday evening, just twelve days after being first laid before the House of Commons. Unanimously approved after a self-congratulatory, back-slapping debate that lasted 90 minutes, it is now on its way to the House of Lords for a second round of … [Read more...] about These green targets waved through by MPs will make the cost of no deal look like small change

Sunak vs Truss: How their voting records compare
R ishi Sunak and Liz Truss have exchanged many heated words during the race to become the next prime minister, yet their actions as MPs have often spoken louder. Ahead of The Telegraph’s leadership hustings in Cheltenham on Thursday night at 7pm, our analysis reveals how the two candidates have voted in hundreds of Commons votes over the last decade. Explore their voting records yourself below, or read on to learn where they stand on the key issues. The key issues of the campaign As the UK’s cost of living crisis intensifies, the candidates’ approach to the economy has been front-and-centre of the campaign. Ms Truss has promised tax cuts from day one if she is elected prime minister, while Mr Sunak has argued that now is not the time, instead pledging to cut taxes once inflation abates. However, their records on tax are not so clear cut, and the voting data — compiled and analysed from Hansard and vote tracking site PublicWhip — shows they have not always … [Read more...] about Sunak vs Truss: How their voting records compare
First Tory MP switches support from Rishi Sunak to Liz Truss in leadership race
Chris Skidmore has become the first Conservative MP to publicly switch his backing from Rishi Sunak to Liz Truss in the in the Tory leadership race. Announcing his defection in an article for The Telegraph, Mr Skidmore said he had became “increasingly concerned” by the Sunak campaign’s “consistently changing position ” on policy. He urged other Tory MPs to join him in switching support to the Foreign Secretary , saying: “It is never too late to make the right decision”. The switch is especially noteworthy as Mr Skidmore, one of the most prominent Tory supporters of Net Zero , is seen as being on the party’s liberal wing, while many of Ms Truss’s most prominent backers are on the traditionalist Right. A Truss campaign source claimed the “floodgates could open” now Mr Skidmore, the MP for Kingswood and a former universities minister, had flipped support, with other defections possible later this week. Mr Skidmore wrote: “The status quo cannot be an option. Initially, … [Read more...] about First Tory MP switches support from Rishi Sunak to Liz Truss in leadership race
Governor Andrew Bailey’s catastrophism is out of control
Andrew Bailey has missed a vocation in journalism. The Governor of the Bank of England has all the right catastrophist instincts, and knows how to generate terrifying headlines. The US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank (ECB) strive to put a gloss on hellish events , careful not to talk their economies into deeper trouble, and are certainly less willing to acknowledge a spiralling rise in the stagflation misery index. The contrast is striking because it is the American economy that contracted over the first two quarters, not the British economy. It is in the US where construction is in freefall, and where S&P Global’s index for services has fallen to deep recession levels, all amid inflation of 9.1pc. It is the eurozone PMI index of economic health that has just fallen through the boom-bust line, not the UK index, which has outperformed in six of the last seven months. As for inflation, it is 8.9pc in the eurozone, and 9.6pc in the EU. It is 9.4pc in the UK. … [Read more...] about Governor Andrew Bailey’s catastrophism is out of control
Liz Truss: ‘I want the biggest change in economic policy for 30 years’
She was one of the Government’s earliest and most enthusiastic adopters of Instagram. Now Liz Truss reveals the secret weapons in her social media strategy: her teenage daughters. And Frances, 16, and Liberty, 14, have also taken to providing advice on the Foreign Secretary’s leadership campaign. “My youngest daughter [Liberty] has been at quite a few campaign meetings and doesn’t hesitate to offer me a lot of political advice,” says Ms Truss. “And actually, I’m not going to tell you what her advice is, but it’s been 100 per cent spot on so far.” Frances is on her way back from an overseas school trip but has also “been keeping in touch”. Ms Truss, 46, is sitting in an upstairs reception room in an 18th century townhouse owned by Lord Howard of Rising, while her campaign team scuttle around downstairs. She has just finished a telephone call with Dmytro Kuleba, Ukrainian foreign minister, with whom she has been in regular contact since Russia’s invasion. The building, … [Read more...] about Liz Truss: ‘I want the biggest change in economic policy for 30 years’
