Boris Johnson: Resignations exceed 50 but PM stays in post

July 7, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Andre Rhoden-Paul & Dulcie Lee Published 7 July Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Boris Johnson remains as prime minister despite his two most recent cabinet appointments calling for him to resign. Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who was given the job two days ago, said the situation was "not sustainable and will only get worse". And Education Secretary Michelle Donelan quit, saying Mr Johnson had "put us in an impossible situation". But Mr Johnson insists he has a "colossal mandate to keep going". The wave of resignations from the government and party exceeded 50 on Thursday, as Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis became the first cabinet member of the day to quit, quickly followed by seven other ministers. Previously loyal supporters - including Priti Patel and Grant Shapps - urged him to step down on Wednesday. Governor Andrew Bailey’s catastrophism is out of control

August 7, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Andrew Bailey has missed a vocation in journalism. The Governor of the Bank of England has all the right catastrophist instincts, and knows how to generate terrifying headlines. The US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank (ECB) strive to put a gloss on hellish events , careful not to talk their economies into deeper trouble, and are certainly less willing to acknowledge a spiralling rise in the stagflation misery index. The contrast is striking because it is the American economy that contracted over the first two quarters, not the British economy. It is in the US where construction is in freefall, and where S&P Global’s index for services has fallen to deep recession levels, all amid inflation of 9.1pc. It is the eurozone PMI index of economic health that has just fallen through the boom-bust line, not the UK index, which has outperformed in six of the last seven months. As for inflation, it is 8.9pc in the eurozone, and 9.6pc in the EU. It is 9.4pc in the UK. … [Read more...] about Governor Andrew Bailey’s catastrophism is out of control

Revealed: Airline where cancellations are 12 times more likely than on Ryanair

July 13, 2022 by news.sky.com

Flights from Gatwick are more likely to have been cancelled so far this year than at any other major UK airport. The rate is 10 times worse than Stansted , the best-performing British hub. More than 3% of planned flights from Gatwick didn't take place, compared with 0.3% of those from Stansted, according to figures from air travel intelligence company OAG provided exclusively to Sky News. June was Gatwick's worst month this year - one in every 14 flights from the airport was cancelled. The data is supplied to OAG from airlines, government agencies and other sources, and a cancellation is defined as any flight that an airline published to operate and was not cancelled at least 48 hours before departure. A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said it regrets any cancellations and disruption to passengers - and explained it is going to carefully increase capacity over the coming months "so that airlines fly more reliable flight programmes and passengers experience a better … [Read more...] about Revealed: Airline where cancellations are 12 times more likely than on Ryanair
