The Waikato coastal town of Raglan has recieved the highest accolade in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards. The annual awards celebrate sustainability, environmental excellence and community beautification. Dunedin named New Zealand's most beautiful city Reddit names New Zealand's top towns and cities Dunedin was crowned the Most Beautiful City, against strong competitor Hutt City, while Taupo and Raglan took out the Most Beautiful Large and Small Town awards, respectively. In addition to winning the Most Beautiful Small Town Award, Raglan also took out the Supreme Award, in what the judges described as 'an unprecedented commitment and effort regarding their community beautification programme.' Thank heavens for Eero Saarinen. The Finnish American architect was a late addition to the jury for the 1957 contest to design the Sydney Opera House (which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit today). Unimpressed with the efforts on show, or so the legend goes, Saarinen reviewed the designs already rejected by his fellow judges and stumbled upon Jørn Utzon's - now iconic - vision. Had he failed to do so, the Australian city may have been lumbered with something far less impressive on its harbourside. The above illustration (produced on behalf of GoCompare) shows a design that almost got the nod. Proposed by Sir Eugene Goossens, who was the conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, it was one of around 220 entries received from dozens of countries.
