Thank heavens for Eero Saarinen. The Finnish American architect was a late addition to the jury for the 1957 contest to design the Sydney Opera House (which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit today). Unimpressed with the efforts on show, or so the legend goes, Saarinen reviewed the designs already rejected by his fellow judges and stumbled upon Jørn Utzon's - now iconic - vision. Had he failed to do so, the Australian city may have been lumbered with something far less impressive on its harbourside. The above illustration (produced on behalf of GoCompare) shows a design that almost got the nod. Proposed by Sir Eugene Goossens, who was the conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, it was one of around 220 entries received from dozens of countries. Here’s another illustration of the same design, shared last year on Twitter. Or this setup envisioned by the chap who came up with the idea of a Sydney opera house in the first place pic.twitter.com/l6toqvHQZ0— … [Read more...] about Rejected designs for the Sydney Opera House

ONLY in Japan would you find a toilet which has a setting to cover up the noises while you poo. But it’s a real thing – and one Reddit user has posted a photo of the ultra-advanced loo from a manufacturer called Toto. They captioned the photo: “This privacy button that covers the sound of your poop plops with ambient noises.” The button you press has a picture of a musical note on it – very subtle indeed. Another user gave even more of an insight into the world of the musical Japanese loo and the reasons behind it. They said: “Was watching a doc about how Japan was handling things after the earthquake. They continued: “It appears that some people were getting sick because they didn't feel comfortable enough with the normal noises to go to the bathroom in the emergency shelters.” Another user said: “Must be in Japan. They love that kind of stuff.” However one user did make a point, writing: “Those buttons definitely … [Read more...] about This Japanese toilet creates ‘ambient’ noises to mask the sound of you pooing
By TAYLOR MURCHISON-GALLAGHER STAFF WRITER Main Street Pint and Plate, 182 Main St., had its official ribbon cutting and grand opening on Monday, April 23. Owners, and husband-and-wife duo, J.R. and Leanne Rusgrove, who also own Parkside Cafe, 95 Maple St., have been working to renovate and ready the building for about five months. “From the bottom of our heart, thank you. This has been a very, very long five months, we know there’s a lot on the line here with the revitalization of the downtown,” said J.R. Rusgrove. “We love the fact that we’re a part of the nucleus of this brand new beginning.” Leanne Rusgrove said the aesthetics of the building, brick walls, tin ceilings and hardwood floors, met their needs, and that they fell in love with the location. She thinks this restaurant will reflect what they’re doing in all of their restaurants. “I think this will compare in that, we have a great staff, we are focusing on attention to detail, … [Read more...] about Main Street Pint and Plate welcomed downtown
A BLOKE who was off work due to being ill innocently asked for suggestions about what he should spend his time doing – only to getting utterly battered by commentators. Reddit user ClarksonYouP*****k posted an image of himself watching daytime telly in his lounge with the caption ‘Sick day today. What should I do?’ But despite feeling under the weather, commentators showed no mercy with many slating the poor chap for his apparent lack of taste in interior design. The guy’s mirror came in for some particularly harsh criticism. Huengonaminson1 got in an early jab with: “Jump through that portal on your wall and see if takes you to a universe where you have a modicum of taste?” Naypenrai simply wrote “bin that mirror” while Umblegar scribbled: “Did all the colours go out the wall vortex?” Others noticed the state of the carpet. Chuckles1188 wrote: “Mow the carpet, it’s getting a bit out of hand" while Gingerbond also … [Read more...] about Bloke posts photo asking internet what he should do with his sick day – and gets absolutely DESTROYED
