A tailor-made structure may make microwave WiFi signals more transmittable through walls without reflection, according to new research. This works in much the same way as anti-reflective coating on a pair of eyeglasses, which also has implications for future 6G mobile communications. Annoying reflections disrupt the transmission of waves, including visible light and invisible mobile communications, and in a new paper appearing in the journal Nature , scientists at the Vienna University of Technology and Rennes University in Austria offer a method to eliminate wave reflection. The paper is titled Anti-reflection structure for perfect transmission through complex media . "You can think of it like the anti-reflective coating on glasses," says Professor Stefan Rotter of Vienna University of Technology. "You add an extra layer to the lens, which then causes light waves to reach the eye better than before. The reflection is reduced," he said. While this is simple in the … [Read more...] about New Wi-Fi reflection tech could send signal through impenetrable walls

Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief
Liz Truss’s plans to slash taxes could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, the boss of Legal & General has said. Nigel Wilson, the influential City grandee and chief executive of the UK’s biggest pensions manager, said that cutting taxes on businesses could boost the attractiveness of Britain as a destination for international investors. Attracting overseas money could soften the blow as the economy heads into a recession, Mr Wilson said. "Reducing the tax burden will be seen by international investors [as a sign] that the country is open for business,” he said. It comes as Ms Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the two candidates vying to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, continue to trade blows about whether immediate tax cuts would boost economic growth or stoke inflation. Ms Truss is in favour of rapidly cutting taxes in the hope it will stimulate economic activity, while Mr Sunak argues that slashing taxes now will only serve to prolong the … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief
Giant ocean sunfish filmed in Gulf of Maine in rare and awesome encounter
An ocean sunfish has been caught on film off the coast of Massachusetts in a rare sighting. The video, which was shared on social media by marine touring company Cape Ann Whale Watch in Gloucester, Massachusetts, shows a white sunfish floating at the surface of the water in the Gulf of Maine. "We got to see a Mola mola or ocean sunfish up close and personal as it made its way down the length of our boat," said Cape Ann Whale Watch in the caption of the video. "These odd looking creatures are the largest of the bony fish. We find them floating on the surface of the water where they look quite flat." Ocean sunfish, which can grow up to 14 feet across and reach weights of over 5,000 lbs, float on their side at the surface in order to warm themselves in the sun after diving in deeper waters. They do not have a tail, instead using their top and bottom fins. They were originally thought to not be capable of independent movement, floating only where the tides and current took … [Read more...] about Giant ocean sunfish filmed in Gulf of Maine in rare and awesome encounter
Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot. Woman’s decomposing body found in garbage: Police
The decomposing body of a woman has been found in the garbage in Chicago, according to police . Chicago firefighters said they were alerted to a report of a body found among garbage in Chicago's South Side on Monday night. When firefighters arrived at 107th Street and Edbrooke Avenue they found a body and identified it as being a man who was in his 40s when he died, Fox32 reported. But the Chicago Police Department (CPD) later told the network that the body was in fact that of a woman. She had been found in a partly decomposed state, according to the network. It was unclear how long she had been left among the garbage. Police are now treating the woman's death as a homicide and have launched an investigation to learn how she died. In 2021, there were 797 homicides in Chicago , which was 25 more than in the year before, according to NBC5 Chicago. It was also the highest number of homicides since 1996.
