There's nothing like watching an action-packed penalty shoot-out pitting players against goalkeepers, with either one leaving as the hero or the villain. At any World Cup, taking a successful penalty means being remembered for years, if not decades. The origins of the penalty The penalty kick as we know it today was introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB's) Law 14 in 1891. In accordance with the law, a player who purposefully trips, holds, or handles the ball within 12 yards of their own goal line is liable for a penalty. What is it like to take a penalty at a World Cup? The USA's all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan, put away 57 goals in 157 games and was America's top scorer in World Cup history. Landon told Football Now that taking a penalty in football's biggest tournament is a "nerve-wracking" experience. "You are very aware that this is a big moment not only for you and your team but your country," Donovan told Football Now. … [Read more...] about FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?

Vinay Srivastava, a 65-year-old journalist from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, died after being denied medical care for severe COVID-like symptoms. He took to Twitter in his final two days to beg for help from various hospitals and doctors. As per Srivastava's tweet on Friday, his oxygen level dropped to 52, which is 43 points below the 95 that is considered 'normal' and significantly lower than 88, which is considered 'alarming'. In his tweet translated from Hindi, he said: "Doctors and hospitals in your state have all become autocratic: I am 65-years-old, along with this, I have spondylitis due to which my oxygen level has dropped to 52 and no hospital lab and doctors are picking up the phone. " He addressed the tweet to Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Netanyahu to miss West Bank annexation date as pandemic takes precedence
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to miss his self-imposed July 1 target to begin annexing territory in the Palestinian West Bank, a controversial election pledge illegal under international law that has prompted protests from the international community. Netanyahu plans to extend Israeli control to West Bank Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley—some 30 percent of all West Bank land—as part of President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan. Palestinian leaders have rejected the proposal as a pro-Israeli blueprint more akin to continued hostile occupation than a bilateral peace deal. Netanyahu entered into a power sharing deal with rival Benny Gantz—leader of the centrist Blue and White coalition—in April after three inconclusive general elections. He will remain prime minister until November 2021 when Gantz—currently defense minister—will then take over. Gantz has supported annexation in the past, but said this week that the project cannot get underway until … [Read more...] about Netanyahu to miss West Bank annexation date as pandemic takes precedence

The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

Both Josh Frydenberg and Karen Andrews learned at Albanese’s press conference on Tuesday morning that their portfolios had been co-opted, prompting a furious Andrews to immediately call for Morrison’s resignation from Parliament. How New Zealand can build on the Lionesses’ pride at the Women’s World Cup
Sarai Bareman is the chief women's football officer at Fifa OPINION: As a proud Kiwi I can’t wait for the Fifa Women’s World Cup to come to New Zealand and Australia next year – and prove that the women’s game has finally come of age on the global stage. I still remember a speech I gave in New Caledonia over a decade ago when – shortly after taking over as head of the Samoan Football Federation – I spoke candidly about the challenges and gender bias I faced. I recalled how I was regularly told I had no idea what I was talking about, that my ideas and suggestions were routinely ignored and that I was laughed at simply because I was a woman.
