The British Army ’s social media accounts were hit by hackers who posted fake declarations of war and cryptocurrency scams. The force’s YouTube and Twitter profiles were both taken over on Sunday but are now back to normal. At one point, its Twitter account falsely tweeted: ‘We are attacking Pakistan.’ It was also flooded with posts encouraging followers to enter into competitions to win NFTs – original digital files. The account’s profile picture was changed to an image of an animated ape in makeup resembling the Batman villain Joker. Similarly, the title of the Army’s YouTube page was changed to ArkInvest – the name of a real global investment company. Videos were posted purporting to show interviews with Elon Musk. The clips were all about investment strategies, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It is not yet known who was behind the hacks, which could have been seen by the Army’s 363,500 followers on Twitter and 177,000 subscribers on YouTube. Twitter down: Some users unable to access site, forced to look at dog instead
Twitter appears to have broken, for some of its users. They were instead forced to look at picture of a dog sitting on a chair, and were told there is “nothing to see here”. The site offered a link to click on, which suggested it might be a way of fixing the problem. But it appeared to simply take users back to the homepage – and showed them that same poodle again. Twitter’s dog appeared to be a new addition: usually, the site shows a more standard error page. For a long time it was famous for another animal – the “fail whale” – that appeared when the site was hit by the common outages that affected its early years. "Splash of Hand Sanitizer Mountain," another Twitter user commented. Others riffed on social distancing, hygiene guidelines and travel restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
