Real Madrid's revival continues. A 3-1 win for Santiago Solari's side in a controversial derby against Atletico lifts Los Blancos into second place in La Liga and all of a sudden, it is not inconceivable that they could challenge Barcelona for the title. The victory arrived amid much contention at the Wanda Metropolitano. Vinicius Junior won a penalty when the foul by Jose Gimenez looked to have taken place outside the area. Alvaro Morata was frustrated as a super lob was ruled out for offside when he may have been on, while the former Chelsea striker saw an appeal for a spot-kick turned down. Before that, Atletico's goal came after what looked like a foul by Angel Correa on Vinicius in the build-up. The video assistant was on hand and did not change any of those calls, validating Madrid's penalty and confirming Atleti's goal after a flag had initially been raised. The home side's supporters believed their team were hard done by and also raged at the referee as Thomas Partey … [Read more...] about Real Madrid win VAR derby: can they challenge Barca in La Liga?
Real Madrid have leapfrogged neighbours Atletico Madrid into second place in La Liga after winning a fiery Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano. Santiago Solari’s side moved to within five points of league leaders Barcelona with Casemiro, Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale on target in a contest dominated by VAR decisions. Alvaro Morata netted a superb individual effort against his former club that would have levelled the contest at 2-2, only to see his effort ruled out for offside. Los Blancos broke the deadlock after just 16 minutes with Diego Simeone’s usually resolute backline undone by a simple set piece. Toni Kroos’ corner kick was met by Ramos, who nodded across to Casemiro, left unmarked eight yards out from goal. The Brazilian still had to find the finish however, beating Jan Oblak with an acrobatic effort. Antoine Griezmann hauled Atletico back into it, slotting past Thibaut Courtois after Angel Correa had robbed Vinicius of possession on the half-way … [Read more...] about Atletico 1 Real Madrid 3: Los Blancos leapfrog neighbours into second
Minute by minute Real Madrid's renaissance under Santiago Solari continued with an impressive 1-3 win over city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday afternoon at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. A spectacular strike from Casemiro and a late first-half penalty conversion from Sergio Ramos sandwiched an Antoine Griezmann goal to give Real the lead at half-time, and then Gareth Bale polished things off with a second-half goal to earn Los Blancos their fifth straight league triumph. It was perhaps the most impressive victory of the Solari era, as Real absorbed some of Atletico's heaviest punches but responded with the dangerous playmaking of Karim Benzema, Vinicius and Luka Modric, combined with a stout defence. Solari stuck with a front three of Lucas Vazquez, Vinicius and Benzema, and Sergio Reguilon at left-back, while veterans Marcelo and Bale were on the bench. Also of note was the start of Thibaut Courtois in goal and the Belgium received a shower of plastic rats from some … [Read more...] about Real Madrid take over the Wanda
The clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona dates back to the establishment of both teams and it was a cup derby, that took place in 1916, which further fuelled the rivalry. From1902, the two teams had faced each other seven times and the Blaugrana managed to win five of them, while the other two ended in a draw. The eighth time Madrid competed against Barcelona, was a double semi-final encounter, of a precursor to the Copa del Rey in 1916. While the rule of the away goals was yet to be introduced in football, the Catalans beat their rivals 2-1 on home soil on March 26. The return leg would take place one week later, when Los Blancos achieved a 4-1 victory against Barcelona, with three goals from Santiago Bernabeu.
