When the Italian film director Gualtiero Jacopetti, who has died at the age of 91, made Mondo Cane (A Dog’s Life) in 1962, he tapped into people’s curiosity and provided the strangest commercially successful film in the history of cinema. Audiences not yet accustomed to cheap air travel or the idea of globalisation were unprepared for its colourful National Geographic-style montages of “primitive” rites and “civilised” wrongs. The following year, they flocked to see the film’s sequels, Mondo Pazzo (Mad World, or Mondo Cane No 2) and La Donna nel Mondo (Women of the World). Mondo Cane was a film made out of a compilation of pithy sequences depicting strange rituals from around the globe. But while Jacopetti documented the peculiarities of what was then described as the third world, he also mocked the alleged superiority of western culture. The stupidity of mass consumerism and the absurd delusions of elite culture suddenly seemed as bizarre as … [Read more...] about Gualtiero Jacopetti obituary

Andy Ruiz junior was an overwhelming 30/1 underdog to beat world champion Anthony Joshua when he waddled into the Madison Square Garden ring in May. He strutted out of it barely half-an-hour later with four belts wrapped around his ample midriff. Joshua discovered the hard way that Ruiz's pre-fight words had been much more than an idle boast. "I've been an underdog all my life. The body shape I have and the way I look, but once I get into the ring..." The bookies rarely make the same mistake twice. The WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion is now just 2/1 to triumph. But will Joshua make the same mistakes? The British bookies make the Londoner heavily odds on to win, just 2/5 with thepools.com . When he first appeared on the professional tennis circuit, Andy Murray was ridiculed and despised for being Scottish, dour, boring, and saying he'd support whichever football team was playing against England. The rest of the country had no time for some stroppy tartan twat who played a poncey sport usually beyond all but the wealthiest parents. His critics felt entitled to loathe a 19-year-old, disown a lad who didn't entertain us, and scorn someone who wanted to win at all costs. After all, we're used to sportsmen who can't win our respect, or any prizes either. But Andy Murray wasn't a privileged little rich boy. He was the son of divorced parents from a part of Scotland where the average wage is less than £20,000 a year. And he wasn't some jerk of an overpaid footballer, taking dives and relying on 10 other men to help him win. Tennis is gladiatorial - two people in an amphitheatre, relying on skill, stamina and training to survive an individual battle that can last for hours … [Read more...] about Thank you, Andy Murray – you aced it
UFC president Dana White admits he has held recent talks with Tyson Fury about a potential move into MMA. The Gypsy King continues to insist he is keen to try his hand in the UFC once he hangs up his boxing gloves for good in the not so distant future. Fury has already made an appearance in WWE and looks set to broaden his portfolio once again after holding talks with White. Speaking recently, the UFC president played down rumours the 31-year-old would be stepping into the Octagon. But White has backtracked, revealing he has spoken with Fury about a change in discipline. "It’s interesting,” he told Washington’s 106.7 FM radio station. “He and I talked the other day. We talked. So he really is interested in fighting, so I respect that. "We’ll see. We’ll see what happens.” Fury beat Swedish fighter Otto Wallin earlier this year before taking on Braun Strowman in a WWE clash. Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder emerged victorious against Luis Ortiz with … [Read more...] about Tyson Fury opens talks with UFC chief over making MMA debut
