REMAINER candidates have been long telling Brits in marginal seats to vote strategically for Labour or the Lib Dems to boot the Tories out. But tactical voting for the Conservatives over Labour or the Brexit Party could see Boris scoop a big win on Thursday. Even after pulling out of 317 seats across the country, the few votes Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party is splitting the Brexit vote in key marginal seats, mimicking the results of the by-elections in Peterborough and Brecon and Radnorshire. Every Conservative MP has promised to vote through Boris Johnson's Brexit deal and deliver on the EU referendum, but votes for Labour or the Brexit Party candidates in constituencies the Conservatives could win could kill the chance of getting a pro-Brexit MP into Parliament and put a Remainer in instead. The Brexit Party has been trailing in the polls for weeks and was forecast to pick up only 3 per cent of the vote in the YouGov MRP poll released in The Times last week. But the support they … [Read more...] about Here’s where Brexit tactical voting in Britain’s marginals could deliver Boris Johnson his election win

I did not intend to be single in the rural village where I live. I’d moved there with my fiance after taking a good job at the local university. We’d bought a house with room enough for children. Then the wedding was off and I found myself single in a town where the non-student population is 1,236 people. I briefly considered flirting with the cute local bartender, the cute local mailman – then realised the foolishness of limiting my ability to do things such as get mail or get drunk in a town with only 1,235 other adults. For the first time in my life, I decided to date online. The thing about talking to people on Tinder is that it is boring. I am an obnoxious kind of conversation snob and have a pathologically low threshold for small talk. I love people who fall into the category of Smart Sad People Flaunting Their Intelligence With Panache. I love Shakespeare’s fools and Elizabeth Bennet and Cyrano de Bergerac. I love Gilmore Girls and the West Wing and Rick … [Read more...] about ‘This is small talk purgatory’: what Tinder taught me about love
North Korea is demanding the return of 13 defectors to the South as a condition for the resumption of talks with Seoul, with support groups for thousands who have fled the repressive regime in the North saying there is genuine fear that Seoul might give in to Pyongyang's demands and that their lives might be at risk. Pyongyang is demanding that 12 women who had worked at a North Korean restaurant in China and their manager be returned to the North after it was claimed on a television program that the women had not been told they were being taken to South Korea in 2016 and that they have been tricked into going by the South Korean intelligence services. On Saturday, the North Korean Red Cross demanded that the women be sent back to Pyongyang and repeated the accusation that the women had been kidnapped. The demands coincide with Pyongyang cancelling a high-level meeting scheduled for last week that was designed to build on the agreements reached when South Korean President Moon Jae-in … [Read more...] about Korean talks: North Korea defectors worried about their fate
