Scouring of rape victims’ medical and school records delaying trials by up to nine months

May 22, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Rape victims’ trials are being delayed for up to nine months by “tenuous” and “disproportionate” searches of their medical, council and even school records, a review by the Attorney General has found. Some victims are waiting months while police and prosecutors carry out “intrusive” searches of “third party” records for personal details that turn out to be irrelevant to the trial. In an interview with The Telegraph, Suella Braverman , QC, cited the case of a rape victim where searches of her carer’s records added nine months to the case yet the resulting evidence was “not relevant to the trial.” “The longer it takes, the more likely it is that the victim will drop out,” she said. This week she will propose a reform package to curb delays including sweeping away unnecessary searches, reducing time-consuming redaction of video and written evidence that can take police officers away from rape investigations for days and earlier disclosure of evidence by lawyers. It is … [Read more...] about Scouring of rape victims’ medical and school records delaying trials by up to nine months

Canadian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton emotional after equalling Ayrton Senna’s career pole record in qualifying

June 11, 2017 by www.independent.co.uk

When Lewis Hamilton’s back is to the wall, he frequently produces his most awesome performances. And so it was on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this afternoon, when the three-time champion took one of the greatest of his pole positions. In doing so he not only defeated arch-rival Sebastian Vettel in a gripping fight that electrified the 40,000 Quebecois race fans who flocked in, but equalled his idol Ayrton Senna’s tally of 65 poles. But that was not left him speechless afterwards. What stole his words and left him on the brink of tears of emotion as he was interviewed in Turn 2 was the surprise gift presented to him on behalf of the Senna family – a genuine race helmet worn when he was driving for Lotus in 1987, by the Brazilian who died at Imola on May 1st, 1994. Recommended Alonso could walk away from F1 if more races are added to the calendar After holding it aloft in its glass box, and then eagerly removing it to show … [Read more...] about Canadian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton emotional after equalling Ayrton Senna’s career pole record in qualifying

Mortgage lending leaps as buyers rush to get ahead of rising rates

July 1, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A rush to lock in low borrowing costs sparked the biggest rise in mortgage lending in eight months as the housing market defied rising interest rates and the cost-of-living crisis. While the figures indicate the property market is holding up more strongly than feared, economists warned a slowdown will soon take hold . Markets expect the Bank of England’s base rate to jump from 1.25pc to above 2.5pc by the end of the year as its policymakers try to battle 40-year-high inflation . pressure on households’ real disposable incomes from the large increase in the cost of essentials, and the current record low level of consumers’ confidence, home-buyer numbers surely will dwindle in the second half of this year.” … [Read more...] about Mortgage lending leaps as buyers rush to get ahead of rising rates

Max Verstappen lets his driving do the talking in Canada

June 8, 2018 by www.independent.co.uk

Max Verstappen delivered a strong response to his recent critics by completing a practice double for the Canadian Grand Prix . Verstappen’s crash last time out in Monaco marked his fifth big mistake from six rounds, and he arrived in North America threatening to “headbutt someone” following a series of questions about his accident-prone campaign. But the 20-year-old Dutchman topped the time sheets in both sessions in his Red Bull at a sun-drenched Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as he allowed his driving to do the talking. Recommended Defined by unfulfilled promises, Alonso now stands at a crossroads Verstappen finished 0.130 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen with championship leader Lewis Hamilton half-a-second off the pace. Sebastian Vettel, who trails Hamilton by 14 points in the title race, was fifth in the order. Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair

June 10, 2018 by www.independent.co.uk

Fernando Alonso might think F1 in its current guise is predictable – and it’s hard not to agree at times – but with the top four drivers covered by just 0.232s, and one of them electing to start on the softest tyre compound, Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix holds great promise. Sebastian Vettel ’s pole position was Ferrari ’s first here since Michael Schumacher back in 2001, and gave fans of the legendary team something to cheer on the circuit named in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, one of the Scuderia’s most-loved drivers of all time. Vettel struggled on Friday, damaging his car’s steering when he brushed a wall in first practice, and then failing to find its sweet spot in the second. But he reported a better feel immediately in final practice on Saturday morning, and made the most of that to set the fastest time in the first qualifying session, and then dominate the third with a new unofficial track record of 1m 10.764s. “I was very happy with the last qualifying … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair

Lewis Hamilton is set to receive a boost in his quest for the world championship, with Mercedes to unleash an upgraded engine for this week's Canadian Grand Prix . Hamilton's peerless Mercedes team have dominated the new campaign, finishing first and second at all but one of the opening six rounds. And world champions Mercedes are poised to strike another blow to their rivals with the planned introduction of their first fresh engine of the season at Montreal's high-powered Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Mercedes will be the last of the front-running manufacturers to introduce its new-specification power unit this year, with Ferrari and the Honda-powered Red Bull team having already introduced their first updates in Spain and Azerbaijan respectively.
