Chris Basham blew the Championship promotion race wide open as Leeds slid out of top two. Not only did Marcelo Bielsa's men miss the chance to go top, they are now playing catch up with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United and in third place. Basham was the unlikely hero, ending Leeds' three game winning streak, and setting the battle for automatic promotion up for a spectacular finish in the final seven game of the season. It will heighten the nerves at Elland Road as Bielsa and Leeds gamble on getting the club into the Premier League after a 15 year absence. Chris Wilder's men were magnificent in defence and didn't give and inch to their nervy rivals. United's David McGoldrick nodded on Jack O'Connell's long ball to set the tenacious Billy Sharp, a pest all game, racing in on goal. Leeds defence briefly regrouped, but Sharp slipped the ball into space to find Basham racing through the middle. The centre half was put in midfield for this clash to stiffen the United resistance, but … [Read more...] about Championship promotion race takes fresh twist as Sheffield United win at Leeds

The sudden death of race director Charlie Whiting set a somber tone for the first weekend of the Formula One season, with the attention to the regular rivalries such as Lewis Hamilton vs. Sebastian Vettel taking a back seat to the incoming tributes for the respected F1 veteran. A day before the first practice session for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, F1 drivers, officials and fans were shocked to learn that a man described as a "faithful friend and a charismatic ambassador" for the sport had died of a pulmonary embolism in Melbourne at the age of 66. Five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton said the ever-diplomatic Whiting was an icon of the sport, and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel said the Englishman was the perfect middle man between the drivers and F1 regulators. Daniel Ricciardo said the drivers sometimes tested Whiting's patience, "but you always felt like he was on our side." "He did a lot for the sport," Ricciardo said. "I'm sure we'll all race with a lot of … [Read more...] about Formula 1: Whiting’s death sets somber tone for opening F1 GP weekend

VANDALS have desecrated 90 Jewish graves with Swastikas and other Nazi graffiti ahead of marches in France, as thousands prepared to rally against anti-Semitism. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the cemetery today in the village of Quatzenheim, near the city of Strasbourg, following the overnight vandalism. He slammed the crime as "odious" after walking through a gate daubed with a swastika as he entered the graveyard. Mr Macron said: "We will take action, we will use the law to punish" – referring to legislation aimed at fighting anti-Semitism. The blue and yellow graffiti was found on scores of graves in part of the cemetery set aside for the local Jewish community in an area which suffered massively during the Holocaust. France’s Interior Minister also denounced the "repugnant act", in a country that collaborated with the Nazis in the Holocaust during the Second World War Occupation.
