'Could future discoveries in particle physics immediately give us new inventions or technology? Years ago things like "quark bombs" seemed conceivable. But probably no more. Yes, one can use particle beams for their radiation effects. But I certainly wouldn’t expect to see anything like muonic computers, antiproton engines or neutrino tomography systems anytime soon. Of course, all that may change if somehow it’s figured out (and it doesn’t seem obviously impossible) how to miniaturise a particle accelerator. … [Read more...] about ‘It feels like it’s a bit of a hack’: Why disappointed scientist Stephen Wolfram feels bittersweet about the discovery of the Higgs boson

"Too often we see cases in the papers about schoolchildren who commit suicide because they are being bullied via social media," he said. "Now the television shows are talking about Kimura, about what she had to put up with, and there is this new awareness of bullying and suicide. … [Read more...] about Hana Kimura: Suicide of Japanese wrestler blamed on online bullying
The interest in the Higgs boson particle has little to do with the real science involved. Americans, unless they are going to be doctors or scientists, learn almost no science in school. What they learn is the new theology of how the universe began from nothing, how life originated in a primordial soup, how we made steady progress from monkeys to apes to hominids to savages all the way to the modern liberals who write the texts and teach the courses. It doesn't matter that most of the story was already in circulation long before the American Revolution. Faith, after all, involves mystery. … [Read more...] about Fascination with the Higgs boson has little to do with real science involved
Around four hours later, Sessions fired back: '@RealDonaldTrump Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you're damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don't dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.' … [Read more...] about Donald Trump slams Jeff Sessions as not ‘mentally qualified’ to be attorney general – even though he appointed him to the job – as feud between two men shows no sign of abating
Starting off, I had thought the main issue would be accuracy. I worried I’d be forced to make wildly inappropriate remarks to longstanding friends and colleagues, like the hapless idiot in an American sitcom, receiving ear-piece instructions to get him through a date with the hottest girl in school. You know the scene: he’s doing great for a while, but eventually comes a cropper when his Bergerac is hit in the crotch by a wheelie bin, or a nest of wasps, which causes our hero to repeat his every swear word verbatim. This, I feared, could be my fate; glibly responding to emails announcing the death of a family friend with blandly inappropriate corporate speak like “Outstanding!” or “Can we change this to Friday?” It turned out I shouldn’t have worried, as the replies were almost universally, even unnervingly, appropriate to the topic. My week was merely a never-ending spree of palatable options that were terrifyingly bland. … [Read more...] about How smart are Gmail’s ‘smart replies’?
