Indonesia's tsunami has raised fears that another deadly wave could wipe out the few dozen Javan rhinos still living in the wild, conservation authorities said Friday. There are believed to be fewer than 70 of the critically endangered species in a national park not far from a rumbling volcano that triggered Saturday's killer wave. None of the animals are believed to have been killed in the disaster -- which left more than 400 people dead -- but officials are warning that another deadly wave could slam into the stricken region. That is putting pressure on conservationists at Ujung Kulon National Park, on the western tip of Indonesia's main island of Java, to ramp up a longstanding plan to find a suitable secondary habitat for the rhinos. "It's become our duty to work harder to find a second habitat because the danger is real," national park chief Mamat Rahmat told AFP. "We're lucky that the tsunami did not affect the Javan rhinos this time. But the threat is there and we need to act … [Read more...] about Indonesia tsunami raises fears for endangered Javan rhino

WORLD Cup defending champions Germany take to the road with Manuel Neuer poised for a second start in a week. The Bayern Munich keeper has not played competitively since fracturing a metatarsal for the second time in a Bundesliga game against Mainz in September. But he happily came through 30 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly against the U20s on Monday unscathed. Neuer, 32, managed only 360 minutes of competitive football in 2017/18. And he last played for Germany in the World Cup qualifying win against Northern Ireland in October 2016. Germany have won 25 of their 39 matches against Austria, including the last nine in a row. They last lost 4-1 in 1986. Joachim Low this week released his dos and don'ts for the World Cup, allowing the players a beer or glass of wine before bedtime. But sex during the tournament is banned. The risk to public health has been raised to “very high” in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the World Health Organization, after a case of Ebola was confirmed in a major city. The first definite case of the deadly virus in the city Mbandaka, which has a population of around 1.5million, was described as a “major, major game-changer in the outbreak,” by WHO deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response, Dr Peter Salama. The fear now is that the disease, which has been linked to the deaths of as many as 25 people so far this year, could spread much faster in a city than in remote, rural areas, where most cases had been reported to date. Caring youngster Lily Moore is raising money to help reopen her local sports centre so she can continue going swimming. The nine-year-old has been selling raffle tickets to friends, family and neighbours to support the Kidsgrove Sports Centre Community Group. So far Lily, of Kidsgrove, has raised more than £500 after she was inspired by reading all about the campaign on her mum’s social media page. Local businesses and residents have rallied around buying tickets and donating prizes ahead of draw, which will be live streamed next month. Lily’s mum Beverley Moore, aged 38, said: “She has always felt let down and disappointed that the sport centre closed because she used to go there swimming and I would go to the gym - the closure affected everyone. “I follow the community group on social media and Lily has been keen to read the posts. Originally she wanted to run a stall selling loom bands to raise money but decided it wouldn’t be enough so ran a … [Read more...] about ‘Superstar’ Lily, 9, launches fund-raising campaign to save sports centre
DECATUR, Ill. - Destiny Doud thought she had just 48 hours to be a mother. Like most of the hundreds of pregnant women who give birth while serving time each year, Doud was slated to give up her newborn to a relative just days after the baby was born last May. Doud recalled hugging Jaelynn close at the hospital, waiving off nurses' offers to take the girl to the nursery. She wanted every minute to hold her daughter ahead of that wrenching separation. But just before handing off the baby to her own father, Doud learned she had qualified for a radical alternative. She could raise Jaelynn behind bars. On June 2, 2017, Doud cradled her newborn as she passed through a chain-link fence topped with razor wire, through heavy steel doors to a cell outfitted with a crib. A sign on the door reads: "Doud: Y21214 Baby: Jaelynn." The Decatur Correctional Center is the only home the girl with wispy blonde hair and ice-blue eyes has known in her 11 months. Prison nursery programs remain rare … [Read more...] about Prisons are allowing mothers to raise their babies behind bars. But is the radical experiment in parenting and punishment a good idea?
