One day, protein shakes are the answer to everything. The next, there's a blogger telling us a mere 10 squats a day will give us better butts. Rather than rely on wishful thinking, we asked dietitians and trainers to weigh in on five common fitness beliefs. Spoiler alert: They're mostly myths. 1. Mat Bailie’s gym has a lot more to offer the community than just weight training – it is also a food bank, a training centre for life-saving skills and a fund-raising hub. The former spray painter encourages members of Warrior Fitness in Loomer Road, Chesterton, to support him in his fund-raising activities, which have included flipping a tractor tyre to the top of Mount Snowdon. He has also used the gym as a food bank and delivered parcels of goods to needy families in the area; and arranged for free Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training sessions to take place at the gym. Mat’s next project will see him lead a garden SOS team to renovate a garden in Chesterton, so that a teenager with a muscle wasting condition will be able to access it in his wheelchair.
