Conservative MP Michael Fabricant is facing calls for his resignation after he posted what has been called a “racist” and “Islamophobic” image on Twitter of a pig mounting London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The now-deleted tweet from Fabricant depicted an image of Khan as a blimp being mounted by a pig. It features US President Donald Trump laughing in the foreground with the accompanying words: “Well, what can I say?” The tweet from Fabricant has led to a string of MPs, Muslim groups, and political commentators asking what it would take for the Tories to take the issue of Islamophobia in their party seriously. Labour’s Afzal Khan MP, who is Muslim, tweeted: “This is abhorrent. Tory members, the former chair of the party @SayeedaWarsi , and the @MuslimCouncil have all called for an inquiry into Islamaphobia (sic). If @BrandonLewis respect pledge means anything, Michael Fabricant must be suspended immediately.” Miqdad Versi, the assistant … [Read more...] about Calls for Tory MP to resign over ‘vile racist’ and ‘Islamophobic’ image of pig mounting Sadiq Khan
Racist and stupid
From dealing with Russia to insulting representatives, the list of Trump’s impeachable offences is running long for Democrats, and they are threatening action if they retake the House in November. “There’s a good likelihood there will be articles of impeachment.” Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) swore on CSPAN Tuesday. “Every member of the House is accorded the opportunity to bring up impeachment...I am not sure that there will be members who are going to wait for someone else if that someone else, doesn’t matter who it is, is declining to do it. We can all do it.” Article Two of the United States Constitution states in Section 4 that the President can be removed from office “on Impeachment for, and conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors." If White House Special Counsel Robert Mueller found any evidence that Trump obstructed justice or accepted foreign payments, there is a possibility that impeachment … [Read more...] about Potty mouth and palling with Putin: The bizarre reasons Democrats want to impeach Trump
Heathrow Airport has condemned a duty free promotion which was deemed to be 'racist' towards Chinese people. The promotional event held by World Duty Free, a commercial partner of Heathrow which runs shops in the busy airport, required Chinese travellers to pay a minimum spend of £1,000 to receive a 20 per cent discount. Shoppers from elsewhere in the world were given the same discount after spending just £250 on goods. Chinese customers took to social media platform Weibo to express their outrage at the apparent discrimination after it was written about in a blog post that was shared more than 75,000 times. Mengyun Xiao said: “I am so naïve that I believed I needed to spend £500 to get the VIP voucher (coz It just changed from £300 to £500 today morning) before! The World Duty Free shop cheated me! Why should we suffer this unfair racism?” Kayla Luo, accused the airport shop of providing “world class racist … [Read more...] about Chinese furious at ‘racist’ duty free promotion at Heathrow airport
On World Philosophy Day, the ideas of groundbreaking thinkers like Immanuel Kant, David Hume, and Martin Heidegger will be shared and celebrated across the globe. But at a time when the focus on writers of European descent in Western universities is being questioned, should we think twice about exalting the ideas of people who were racist and xenophobic? And can you separate a philosopher's identity from their ideas? Once confined to dusty university libraries and lecture theatres, philosophy has hit the headlines of late: more specifically, the debate surrounding philosophy and race. "They Kant be serious!" exclaimed a recent Daily Mail headline on a story that a group called Decolonise Our Minds at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London was campaigning to include more philosophers of colour in the curriculum. They argued that SOAS and other Western universities favour texts by white, male philosophers, at the expense of Eastern thought (although this is itself a … [Read more...] about Is Western philosophy racist and xenophobic?
Have you ever said or done something innocently that upset someone? Something you did because you weren’t informed, or just didn’t read the situation as someone who might find it offensive? This week on Loose Women, I found myself in exactly that boat. We were discussing the controversial H&M ad with a little black boy in a green hoodie which read, ‘Coolest monkey in the jungle’. I was asked if I found it offensive. The truth is, I found it positive as all I saw was a beautiful child in a T-shirt. And all I could think was, it’s so great to see a little black boy in a big fashion campaign (plus I thought I’d buy that top for my little boy Zac). I was shocked it had been branded “racist” and a symbol of colonial oppression. Celebs waded in. Canadian R’n’B star The Weeknd – who produces H&M menswear collections – cut ties with the chain. Rapper P Diddy tweeted an alternative version of the … [Read more...] about ‘The innocent mistake behind “racist” H&M advert – and why all I can see is a beautiful child in a T-shirt’
