Protesters at the British Grand Prix are being urged not to invade the track on race day. Northamptonshire Police says it has received intelligence that individuals may attempt to interrupt the Formula 1 event at Silverstone on Sunday. Appealing directly to the protesters, Chief Inspector Tom Thompson said: "I strongly urge you to not put yourselves, the drivers, as well as the many marshals, volunteers and members of the public, at risk." With racers travelling at speeds of more than 140mph, the event commander described the plans as "reckless" - and stressed "going on a live racetrack is extremely dangerous". He added: "Protesting is of course everyone's human right in this country and we are more than happy to speak with you to help you facilitate a peaceful protest at the circuit, we just please ask that you do not create a situation that puts lives in danger." Brussels ‘taking advantage’ of Boris Johnson’s leadership woes by refusing Brexit concessions
Brussels is taking advantage of Boris Johnson’s leadership woes by refusing Brexit concessions , sources say. MPs are set to vote on Monday on controversial new laws to give ministers powers to override parts of the post-Brexit deal on Northern Ireland . It is part of an attempt to wrest concessions out of the EU, but Brussels is reluctant to make further offers beyond their October proposals , which they have accused the UK of ignoring in the months since they were put on the table. The UK has demanded EU capitals give negotiator Maros Sefcovic a fresh mandate to make further concessions and effectively rewrite the treaty, which the EU has repeatedly ruled out. 'EU is far more likely to watch on in silence' But the Telegraph understands there is little appetite for major concessions, in part because of Mr Johnson’s shaky grasp on his leadership. "The EU is far more likely to watch on in silence as the UK engages in what Brussels would see as another round of … [Read more...] about Brussels ‘taking advantage’ of Boris Johnson’s leadership woes by refusing Brexit concessions

Nicola Sturgeon’s nightmare vision for EU member Scotland makes NI Protocol look like child’s play
Getting Brexit done was a major headache. But taking Scotland out of the UK and into the EU would be the mother of all migraines. Nicola Sturgeon’s dream of an independent Scotland rejoining the EU would make the problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol look simple in comparison. Brussels would insist Scotland treats England as a "third country", which means fresh English sausages, live mussels and unfrozen lasagne would be banned north of the border. English dogs, cats and ferrets would have to be vaccinated three weeks before being allowed into Ms Sturgeon ’s brave new world. Sassenach racing pigeons would be frisked by unsmiling border guards because of EU animal health rules. And English racehorses would face new bureaucratic hurdles to clear before they could compete in independent Scotland. Fortnum & Mason and Marks & Spencer hampers could be a thing of the past for Scottish households, as they are already in Northern Ireland, as businesses decide … [Read more...] about Nicola Sturgeon’s nightmare vision for EU member Scotland makes NI Protocol look like child’s play
Rishi Sunak warned he has five months to get ‘house in order’ by furious business chiefs
Rishi Sunak has been warned he has five months to get his “house in order” by furious business chiefs. Shevaun Haviland, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said firms face a “perfect storm” of spiralling costs. She demanded no more business tax rises before a 2024 election. And she called for an “urgent review” of the list of shortage jobs exempt from post-Brexit immigration rules. She said: "Increasing costs of raw materials over last summer, supply chain and shipping issues, problems in recruiting people, and by this March, spiralling energy prices. “It really is the perfect storm for businesses, firmly putting the brakes on recovery." She added: "The Spring Statement was a missed opportunity. We saw some support for business, but the lack of a clear strategic direction meant it did not give clarity or confidence. “This has to change; we are on limited time. “The Government has until the autumn budget to reset, rethink and get their house in … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak warned he has five months to get ‘house in order’ by furious business chiefs
Brexit won’t be overturned for at least a generation, admits Tony Blair
Tony Blair has admitted that Brexit will not be overturned for at least a generation but insisted Britain needs to “fix” its trading relationship with Europe . The former Prime Minister, a leading advocate of a second referendum , conceded that the argument over the decision to leave the EU was now settled. “However passionately I opposed Brexit, I understand we’ve done it,” Sir Tony told a conference in central London organised by his think tank. “We’ve done it legally, we’ve done it politically and it’s not going to be reversed any time soon – let’s say any time in this generation. “But you’ve still got to fix the problems. This stuff in Northern Ireland is doing us damage. The fact you’ve got labour shortages is doing us damage. The fact we’ve got exports down and the pound devalued and business investment down is doing us damage. You’ve got to fix it.” Sir Tony was a leading light in the People’s Vote campaign and spent three years fighting to overturn … [Read more...] about Brexit won’t be overturned for at least a generation, admits Tony Blair

Covid in Scotland: Do I still need to test and self-isolate?
Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic Covid case numbers are continuing to rise, with one in 18 Scots estimated to have had the virus in the week ending 24 June. Some experts believe this is being driven by the more infectious Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. So what is the current guidance on Covid? The current public health advice is to stay at home if you feel unwell or have a fever.
