Archant Ely’s “thrilling” Potato Race is returning to the city for its seventh year! The annual relay race, organised by Isle of Ely Produce in conjunction with more than 30 local farmers, is being held on Saturday, October 13. The event, which coincides with Ely Cathedral’s Harvest Festival, will be opened by the Mayor of Ely Mike Rouse and the race will begin at 11am. Before February this year, Mirror Sport secretary Sarah Cook had never even been to a gym. Now she is signed up to one of the toughest tasks in sport: becoming a horse racing jockey. On August 2 this summer, Sarah will jump in the saddle at the Qatar Goodwood Festival for the Magnolia Cup. The charity race - which our Sarah is riding for Cancer Research UK - is made up of 12 women and run over five-and-a-half furlongs on racehorses rated between 60-75. Sarah, who was a member of Great Britain's Under-21 showjumping team in 2003, has been a keen rider since the age of six and is currently training with Pat Phelan a Ermyn Lodge in Epsom. And to help her in her preparations for the big race in August, we sent her along to the British Racing School to take on a live fitness assessment for jockey's alongside Richard Perham and his team at Newmarket.
