The Mayor of East Staffordshire has quit social media after facing fierce criticism for "liking" an allegedly Islamophobic Facebook post about London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Tory mayor Chris Smith has issued a full apology for his actions, but said he believed the post in question was merely satirical. The exact nature of the post is not known, but East Staffordshire Labour Party chairman Paul Walker has previously said it showed a mock-beheading. Councillor Smith, who represents the Crown Ward, said: "I am very proud to have served the council as mayor for the last 10 months. "I have carried out the role with dignity and honour and have tried to carry this forward without using politics. "On this occasion I allegedly liked a repost of what I believe was satire about the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Social media giant Facebook has come under scrutiny in the wake of the attacks on two Christchurch mosques last Friday, after the alleged gunman livestreamed his attack there. The video then circulated around the internet and has been viewed more than a million times. Kiwi advertisers have since pulled out of advertising with the platform to put pressure on it to regulate its livestreaming services. Facebook has remained silent in the eleven days since the attack.
