Five suspects questioned over murders of Brit journalist and his guide in Amazon
Brazilian police are investigating five suspects over the murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. This week human remains were found in search of the pair, who went missing in a remote part of the Amazon rainforest. It is thought they were last seen alive early on June 5 in Sao Rafael district. Police said a suspect confessed to shooting the men, and led them to the bodies. Investigators had arrested brothers Oseney and Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, who on Wednesday admitted to murdering the pair with a firearm and covering up their remains. But detectives are believed to be interrogating three other people, at least one of whom is suspected of having a hand in the killings. The other two are suspected of helping conceal the bodies and ordering the hit, according to federal police officers speaking on condition of anonymity. Police were led by prime suspect Amarildo deep into a remote part of the Amazon near the Peru … [Read more...] about Five suspects questioned over murders of Brit journalist and his guide in Amazon

London Underground: New data reveals the noisiest sections of the Tube
Published 6 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The Victoria Line on the Tube network is a hotspot for noise complaints, according to new City Hall data. Five sections of the line, which runs from Walthamstow to Brixton, have accrued 306 complaints about loud screeching in Tube tunnels. London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon has called on Transport for London (TfL) to do more to prevent the noise. TfL says it has undertaken 17,500 metres of noise-related rail grinding in the last six months. It advises that noise coming from tracks can be from normal wear and tear, track faults or misaligned joints. John Le Carre poison pen letter to Hunter Davies could be revealed
John le Carré once wrote: “If you make your enemy look like a fool, you lose the justification for engaging him”. But the late Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy author did not stick to his word when he turned on biographer Hunter Davies, in a "vitriolic" letter that ended their longtime friendship. Now the letter, sent in 1990, could be seen for the first time after Davies pledged to donate it to the British Library in the hope that "some future biographer might read it and try to answer the question: 'What on earth was that all about?' While the letter remains the copyright of le Carré’s estate , the British Library has said that if it is donated it will be “made available to researchers through our Reading Rooms in London and Yorkshire”, and could eventually be made available to the general public in a “temporary exhibition” or “permanent gallery”. Should the letter go on display to the general public in the future, visitors can expect to find the words “This man is mad” scrawled … [Read more...] about John Le Carre poison pen letter to Hunter Davies could be revealed
On Boxing Day we need to hear the ring of church bells, not cash tills
When the petition came my way, a week ago, it had 100,000 signatures; today, it has more than 234,000. Its demand is simple: shut the shops on Boxing Day. “We managed 30 and 40 years ago when shops were sometimes shut for a whole week,” it said. “Let’s get back to the way it was.” Those last words sounded like a riff on the theme of 2016 – nostalgia for a better time fuelled rebellions in the UK, America, and Italy. But the men at the till, the saleswomen and the shelf stackers who had organised the petition were not rebels. They were not strikers like the disgruntled Southern rail workers or Post Office staff . They were ordinary people whose plea could have come from any one of us. They were asking for the two ingredients we all yearn for: time and silence. These are the two elements necessary for happiness: time in which to recover from the past, silence in which to take stock for the future. Sir Anthony Seldon, pioneer in the pedagogy of wellbeing, wrote in his book, … [Read more...] about On Boxing Day we need to hear the ring of church bells, not cash tills
