Erica Baker likes poker. So did many of the engineers she spent 10 years working with at Google, in the California headquarters of one of the world’s most valuable technology companies. When she was eventually invited to a poker night with other engineers, the group of white, male colleagues fell silent as she walked into the room. “That did not feel good,” she says. “I get that it’s comfortable to be around people like you, but it’s also pretty important to be around people who are not like you – it helps one grow as a human being. That was the point where I started to get fed up with Google.” Around the same time, in late November 2014, Baker joined a local Black Lives Matter protest after the shooting of a black teenager by a white police officer. When she posted a photo to Twitter, Stewart Butterfield, the co-founder of Slack, a new chat tool for use at work, sent her a message: “Stay safe.” She says, “I just … [Read more...] about Beyond email: could startup Slack change the way you work?

A woman who cannot use her legs and left arm was told to ‘find work’ and had her benefits stopped. Tetraplegic Julie Rodger, 55, was also sent her P45 after she missed an appointment for a Department of Work and Pensions medical check up. The mum-of-three has very limited use of her right arm after she suffered catastrophic injuries due to an asthma attack. It left her brain starved of oxygen for around 15 minutes on Sept 1, 2000, and she relies on devoted husband Vince for her ‘every need’. He has cared for his wife since her release from hospital, after coming out of a three-month coma, in 2001. The couple moved from the home they shared with their two daughters in Birtley, Gateshead, last year to South Milford near Selby in North Yorkshire. Vince contacted benefits staff in Blackpool to give them the new address. It was noted for him, but not his wife. He then had to travel 120 miles to Durham city for an assessment of Julie’s needs, pushing her up a … [Read more...] about Woman who can’t use her legs and left arm was told to ‘find work’ and had her benefits stopped
Labour will launch its mass nationalisation project within weeks of taking power, John McDonnell will boast today. The shadow chancellor is pledging that kicking off huge plans for the state to take ownership of water, energy, rail and even broadband will be a key priority in the party's first 100 days. The focus on the radical scheme - which has an estimated £200billion price tag and businesses warn would take the country back to the 1970s - comes as the party desperately tries to overhaul the Tories' poll advantage with just three days to go until the election. However, Boris Johnson today warned that the outcome on Thursday is closer than it looks - and Conservatives should take 'nothing for granted'. In a speech this morning, Mr McDonnell will try to convince voters that Labour can deliver its huge promises to pump billions into public services, higher benefits and offers such as universal free broadband and scrapping tuition fees without raising taxes for ordinary … [Read more...] about Labour vows to start £200billion mass nationalisation of water, energy, rail and broadband within WEEKS of entering government

France grappled with a fifth day of mass strikes on Monday, with public sector workers like train drivers, teachers and hospital employees staying away from work to protest against the government's proposed pension reforms. In Paris, train, bus and metro services faced severe disruption and monster tail backs clogged the roads as people drove to work instead. Fourteen of the city's 16 metro lines were shut down completely, with only the two fully automated lines running as normal. More than 600 kilometers (370 miles) of gridlock were reported in the Paris region early on Monday, twice the normal level according to the Sytadin traffic website. The road traffic was worse on Monday than when the strike started last week, because many French employees managed to work from home or take a day off then. But that's increasingly difficult as the strike continues. Only about a sixth of French trains were running on Monday and international train lines also saw disruptions, … [Read more...] about France strikes as Macron pushes ahead with pension reforms
