Philippines: Facing COVID and the climate crisis

· January 26, 2021 ·

Colin Seranina has been a fisherman for 25 years. The waters around Pilar on the Philippine island of Ponson once provided enough fish to feed his family of four kids with some extra to sell at the market. But the island is particularly susceptible to the changing climate, and the fisherfolk now often go home empty-handed after a day out on the sea. Times have become even harder since the coronavirus pandemic struck, because the large fish markets are closed. Instead, Seranina and other fisherfolk sell their leftover catch to their neighbors for a lot less money than they'd receive at the market. Communities like those in Pilar work with conservation NGO Rare to make sure they have food security into the future. They've established coastal protection areas to allow fish populations to recover and have set up savings clubs so fishing families have some cash to fall back on. Project goal: Protecting coastal regions and creating sustainable fisheries to secure food and … [Read more...] about Philippines: Facing COVID and the climate crisis

COVID-19: People in their 40s first for phase two of vaccine rollout – no priority for teachers and police

· February 26, 2021 ·

The next phase of COVID vaccinations will continue to prioritise people by age and not their occupation to avoid slowing down the rollout. People aged 40-49 will be the next in line to get a vaccine after all vulnerable groups and the over-50s are covered, the government said. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) said this would provide "the greatest benefit in the shortest time". It added that prioritising occupational groups such as teachers and police could make the rollout more complex and could potentially slow the programme overall, leaving some vulnerable people at higher risk for longer. Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world Advertisement In a statement, a government spokesperson confirmed all four nations of the UK would follow the recommendations "subject to the final advice given by the independent expert committee". The spokesperson added that age had been assessed to be "the strongest … [Read more...] about COVID-19: People in their 40s first for phase two of vaccine rollout – no priority for teachers and police

Monster ‘stabs his pregnant wife to death then kills his step-daughter, 5, when she shielded her mum with her body’

· February 26, 2021 ·

A FIREFIGHTER is accused of stabbing his pregnant wife to death before killing her daughter as she tried to protect her mum. Konstantin Kapustin, 25, allegedly stabbed new bride Marina Kapustina, 30, and five-year-old Nikol, 25 times with a kitchen knife in Russia. The horrific incident occurred at the family’s house in the city of Vologda, in the north-west of the country, two weeks after the couple’s wedding. Kapustin had presented himself as a caring partner but began drinking heavily days after tying the knot, a court was told. After getting fed up with his drinking, Marina started ignoring him. A video shows Kapustin saying to detectives: “I came home and she didn’t say hello to me. I got angry. Went to the kitchen and took the biggest knife.” Kapustin, who reportedly was drunk at the time, is said to have attacked Marina with the weapon in front of little Nikol. The man hit his wife with the knife seven times and then attacked the child, who had rushed … [Read more...] about Monster ‘stabs his pregnant wife to death then kills his step-daughter, 5, when she shielded her mum with her body’

Single dose of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine blocks three-quarters of symptomless infections, study on NHS staff finds

· February 26, 2021 ·

A single dose of the Pfizer /BioNTech coronavirus vaccine may block 75 per cent of symptomless infections, a study on NHS workers has suggested. Asymptomatic screening of staff at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge showed the number of people testing positive fell from 0.8 per cent to 0.2 per cent 12 days after their injection. The 'very impressive' findings are another sign that the UK's gamble to delay the second dose in a bid to get wider coverage quicker has paid off. Curbing symptomless infections is crucial to stopping outbreaks from growing unknowingly because people who do not feel ill are less likely to self-isolate. Numerous studies had indicated that a single injection of the Pfizer jab prevented severe illness and death but to what degree it blocked asymptomatic spread was unclear. Research has also suggested Oxford University's jab stops more than 60 per cent of asymptomatic cases. The study, led by Cambridge University, analysed thousands of weekly Covid … [Read more...] about Single dose of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine blocks three-quarters of symptomless infections, study on NHS staff finds
