Bob Nightengale USA TODAY Published 3:05 PM EST Feb 8, 2019 Major League Baseball has no plans to adopt a universal DH before the 2022 season, two officials with direct knowledge of the decision, told USA TODAY Sports after the completion of their owners’ meetings in Orlando, Fla. The news comes to the relief of many National League clubs and their fanbases, who are adamantly opposed to implementing a DH for the first time in their league. “It’s not happening during this CBA,’’ one official told USA TODAY Sports. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires in December, 2021. The proposal was submitted last week by the Major League Baseball Players Association to counter MLB’s proposals of a pitch clock and other ideas of speeding up the game. “Those are significant economic issues,’’ MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said at his news … [Read more...] about MLB: Adopting DH in NL not likely until at least 2022 season

MLB ‘disabled list’ to be renamed ‘injured list’
Bob Nightengale USA TODAY Published 7:02 PM EST Feb 7, 2019 Major League Baseball's "disabled list" will be renamed the "injured list," a person with direct knowledge of the proposal confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league had not yet made an announcement. ESPN first reported the plan. The new designation intends to reflect that injured players do not in fact, have a disability. Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem said Thursday the change is being made at the suggestion of advocacy groups. "In recent years, the commissioner has received several inquiries regarding the name of the 'Disabled List,'" Pfeifer wrote in a memo. "The principal concern is that using the term 'disabled' for players who are injured supports the misconception that people with disabilities are injured and therefore are not able to participate or compete in sports. "As a result, Major League Baseball has agreed to change the name 'Disabled List' to … [Read more...] about MLB ‘disabled list’ to be renamed ‘injured list’

Not everything he said was true. But the night did hold some surprises: Trump slammed “ridiculous partisan investigations" but didn't mention Robert Mueller by name. He railed against abortion — a possible hint at his 2020 playbook. Female Democratic lawmakers … [Read more...] about State of the Union, MLB rules and Game of Thrones: Wednesday’s news

Top agent Boras calls rebuilding teams ‘competitive cancer’
AP Updated 2:21 AM EST Nov 8, 2018 CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — The agent for free agent Bryce Harper and many of baseball's top players claims rebuilding teams have become a "competitive cancer" that caused this season's 4 percent attendance drop. As the sport's officials start to consider possible rules changes to spark offense and speed up play, Scott Boras acidly critiqued several clubs that were among the 17 to draw fewer fans this year than last. Boras pointed out Louisiana State's baseball team had a higher average attendance for its 37 home games than the Miami Marlins did for their 81 — 10,786 to 10,014. "The fans of Florida have certainly brought the MIA to Miami," he said Wednesday in a courtyard outside the general managers' meetings. He claimed when "the divisional clubs come to Minnesota, it's gotten so bad that only one of the Twins shows up." And he criticized the Toronto Blue Jays, who had the biggest decrease in the major leagues this year, falling by … [Read more...] about Top agent Boras calls rebuilding teams ‘competitive cancer’
