Manchester has been remembering the 22 victims of the arena bombing five years on from the terrorist attack. People have been paying their respects at events across the city to those who died in the 2017 suicide blast , which also left more than a thousand others injured as they left an Ariana Grande concert. A minute's silence has been held at Victoria station, which is next to the arena, and prayers were being held throughout the day at Manchester Cathedral. The cathedral's bells will toll at 10.31pm to mark the moment of the attack, which happened as mainly youngsters were leaving the venue. Thousands taking part in the Great Manchester Run clapped in memory of those killed, while people were also encouraged to visit the new Glade of Light memorial , which was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier this month . Feeding the world was made possible by genetic science – we cannot stop now
W hen the Ethiopian famine finally ended in 1985, with a million people dead, nobody expected it to be the last great famine for more than three decades. In defiance of almost all predictions, mass famine has almost entirely vanished from the face the earth as a cause of death, North Korea excepted. In the 1960s famine killed 100 times as many people, per head, as in the past decade. Though hunger persists among the world’s poorest, the world is better fed than ever before, despite the human population doubling since the 1960s. Even more remarkably, this has been achieved without ploughing extra land. Leaving aside the increasing amount of land devoted to the nonsense of growing biofuels, then there is less land farmed today than 50 years ago. If we tried to feed today’s nearly eight billion people on the average agricultural yields of 1960, when most farming was organic, then instead of farming less than 35 per cent of global land we would need to farm over 85 per cent. Cut down … [Read more...] about Feeding the world was made possible by genetic science – we cannot stop now

The group recalled a leaked email from within the national broadcasting company, suggesting that the coverage of the Diamond Jubilee back in 2012 would not be balanced. According to Republic, the leaked email made clear that “no dissenting voices against the Queen” were allowed in the programme at the time. Germans and sex: It’s complicated
Regine Thoeren ran Cologne's only erotic store for women for 25 years. At the end of 2019, the now 65-year-old closed "Lady's Toys" for good — the competition from the internet just became too intense. DW's Meet the Germans host Rachel Stewart had a chat with her to find out more about the Germans' sex life. DW: Ms. Thoeren, over the past couple of years, the Germans have spent a lot of time with their loved ones at home — inevitably due to the coronavirus pandemic. How do you think that has affected their sex life ? Regine Thoeren:Unfortunately, it was too often not in a good way... Studies show that there is more violence against women , as well as more violence against children. People are living crammed together in spaces that are often too small. Unfortunately, I have nothing better to report. There is certainly a number of people who have flourished by spending time in close quarters, but it is a minority. Survivors unite on fifth anniversary of Manchester terror attack
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Manchester Arena terror attack that took 22 lives and left hundreds injured. Church bells tolled at midday as people across the northern city fell silent. Another silence at 10.31pm tonight will mark the exact time a bomb was detonated at the Ariana Grande concert on May 22, 2017. Remembrance services are being held at the Glade of Light Memorial, which was designed to honour the lives lost. Prince William told families of victims he knew the ‘pain and the trauma has not gone away’ after travelling up with Kate Middleton to open the memorial earlier this month. Today is the first time in three years that people in Manchester can mark the anniversary free of Covid restrictions. More than 20,000 racers at the Great Manchester Run applauded the 22 victims before setting off on a 10km race today. Survivor Freya Lewis, 19, who learned to walk again after suffering multiple injuries, fractures and burns, took part and was … [Read more...] about Survivors unite on fifth anniversary of Manchester terror attack

Sharing the ordeal on social media, Aisleyne told her followers: ‘I have mild pneumonia… not cool, I’ve been suffering with my health a lot lately, another reason I really want to get my physical health back up to scratch… ‘The past 36 hours have been a blur … so tired of getting ill but nothing will defeat me. I will bounce back stronger, that’s a fact.’ She then shared photos of the heart monitor pads on her chest as well as a snap of sticky pads on her ankles as she revealed she was ‘so happy to be home’. The dangers of app-based delivery work
The delivery service business gained popularity in Berlin a little over a decade ago, when firms like Berlin-based Lieferheld introduced platforms for people to order meals from restaurants, with restaurant employees completing the deliveries. Starting around 2013, this model was effectively replaced by online and app-based services that hired their own delivery workers. This allowed customers to order from restaurants that didn't employ their own delivery staff and simultaneously created thousands of delivery jobs that offered flexible schedules and required very little training. Now the delivery business market is expanding beyond food and grocery services. German-based Mayd (Meds at your door), began delivering medications to peoples' homes last year and has already expanded to 25 German cities and hired 900 workers. "We will be active all over Germany by the end of the year," said Hanno Heintzenberg, co-founder of Mayd, adding that the company also had plans to expand … [Read more...] about The dangers of app-based delivery work
Turkey: Huge rally for opposition’s Canan Kaftancioglu

Boris Johnson jumps out of the partygate frying pan into the inflationary flames
Boris Johnson has seemingly survived partygate; but can he survive harsh economic reality? Is this, in other words, a case of out of the frying pan of rule-breaking trivia into the potentially far more lethal flames of a seemingly intractable cost-of-living crisis? The Prime Minister is burning through his nine lives with ferocious speed, yet it is just about possible to see how he might see this one off too. To be sure, the economic narrative as it now stands is grim, with inflation surging to levels not seen since the early 1980s and the chances of recession rising by the day. Some business leaders I talk to already regard another near-term recession as inevitable. Indeed, the parallels with the early years of the first Thatcher government – when a global recession, initially prompted by an oil price shock, tore through the UK economy, with devastating consequences for inflation, interest rates, and employment – are quite striking in this regard. Without the triumph of the … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson jumps out of the partygate frying pan into the inflationary flames
JAN MOIR: I know he’s a charismatic gnome but even as a Hollywood A-lister devoted to dare-devilry, Tom Cruise gives me the creeps
He is the last man standing, the straightest of straight arrows and according to some the only true A-list film star left in the world. He is courageous, ageless and fearless but nevertheless, Tom Cruise slightly gives me the creeps. It's irrational, it's unfair, but I can't help it. In the Big Jan Book Of Bad, my groundless beefs against Tom include the oppression of his sincerity, the thickness of his hair, his continuing devotion to dare-devilry and the lavish humility he extends at every opportunity. 'No one asks Gene Kelly 'why do you dance, why do you do your own dancing?' he said this week, when someone asked him why he does his own stunts. So modest! He is courageous, ageless and fearless but nevertheless, Tom Cruise slightly gives me the creeps. It's irrational, it's unfair, but I can't help it Approaching his 60th birthday, Tom is the Dorian Gray of action films, a man who will strap himself to the outside of a fuselage the way that most men will strap … [Read more...] about JAN MOIR: I know he’s a charismatic gnome but even as a Hollywood A-lister devoted to dare-devilry, Tom Cruise gives me the creeps
