Woolly mammoths were ‘wiped out by humans AND climate change’ – and would otherwise still be here today

· February 25, 2021 ·

PREHISTORIC humans may have been responsible for the extinction of the Woolly Mammoth after all, according to research. Simulations suggest that a combination of hunting by hungry humans and dramatic climate change killed off the mighty beasts 4,000 years ago. Previously, scientists have suggested that extreme weather or genetic disease may have driven the demise of the species. According to new research from experts in Australia, mammoths would not have died out when they did if it were not for humans. "In the absence of humans, we would expect woolly mammoths would have persisted for an extra 4,000 years in some areas," Dr Damien Fordham at the University of Adelaide in South Australia told New Scientist . The models also suggested that mammoths survived longer in several locations across Eurasia than was previously believed. "People should be sending out expeditions to find fossil material," Dr Fordham said. The Woolly Mammoth – the last surviving mammoths … [Read more...] about Woolly mammoths were ‘wiped out by humans AND climate change’ – and would otherwise still be here today

The 13 best camping chairs you can buy in 2021

· February 26, 2021 ·

CAMPING chairs are not only useful for camping, but it's a great choice for the park, picnics, outdoor events and even the garden if you don’t want to leave patio furniture out all year round. Keep a couple in the storage cupboard and you’ll find yourself taking them out for all sorts of reasons. Generally, you get what you pay for with camping equipment – the more expensive designs tend to be sturdier and will last longer, though there’s no shame in buying budget chairs if you’re only going to be using them occasionally. On that, one important thing to consider before investing in camping chairs is where you’re going to store them, as some designs, though folding, still take up a fair amount of space. You’ll also need to think about how comfortable you want to be – many camping chairs sit lower to the ground than normal chairs so can be tricky to get out of, and some aren’t padded so can become uncomfortable after a while. Our round-up of portable camping chairs brings you … [Read more...] about The 13 best camping chairs you can buy in 2021

Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

· February 26, 2021 ·

A mum was left "disgusted" after her 10-year-old daughter was sent home-schooling work that included "inappropriately sexual" phrases. Annette Farrington, 27, from Fazakerley, Liverpool, was home-schooling her daughter when she noticed the worrying material. The English homework included phrases such as "She fondled", "I stroked", and "She felt his". Annette said: "She got the homework just before half-term but because there was so much we had some left over so we were doing it yesterday. "She was doing work on the Holocaust, and I think it had got mixed up with that. "When I was looking at it I thought that doesn't even make sense, why it would be there? "But after speaking to the school they said it was part of an English lesson giving examples to help kids make their own story." Printed on one of the English worksheets for her daughter were short sentences describing how somebody may feel. Under the header "How do I feel?" examples were listed, including "When I … [Read more...] about Mum ‘disgusted’ after daughter, 10, sent ‘inappropriately sexual’ work from school

Single dose of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine blocks three-quarters of symptomless infections, study on NHS staff finds

· February 26, 2021 ·

A single dose of the Pfizer /BioNTech coronavirus vaccine may block 75 per cent of symptomless infections, a study on NHS workers has suggested. Asymptomatic screening of staff at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge showed the number of people testing positive fell from 0.8 per cent to 0.2 per cent 12 days after their injection. The 'very impressive' findings are another sign that the UK's gamble to delay the second dose in a bid to get wider coverage quicker has paid off. Curbing symptomless infections is crucial to stopping outbreaks from growing unknowingly because people who do not feel ill are less likely to self-isolate. Numerous studies had indicated that a single injection of the Pfizer jab prevented severe illness and death but to what degree it blocked asymptomatic spread was unclear. Research has also suggested Oxford University's jab stops more than 60 per cent of asymptomatic cases. The study, led by Cambridge University, analysed thousands of weekly Covid … [Read more...] about Single dose of Pfizer’s Covid vaccine blocks three-quarters of symptomless infections, study on NHS staff finds
