Singing “We will, we will stop you,” climate change activists disrupt Shell shareholders meeting; some glued themselves to seats

May 24, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

London — Oil giant Shell was forced to temporarily suspend its annual general meeting (AGM)Tuesday when it was disrupted by climate change activists. Proceedings at the venue in central London were halted about half an hour after they started. "Stop kidding yourself that you are doing no harm," protesters shouted at stockholders, according to a live feed of the meeting. "Think of your children and your family. They will not escape the effects of the climate emergency." Demonstrators sang "We will, we will stop you!" to the tune of Queen's 1977 rock anthem "We Will Rock You" before police arrived and they were ejected. Some glued themselves to seats, The Guardian reports . Outside, another group of protesters sang and shouted slogans such as "shame on Shell" and holding signs saying the company is "guilty of ecocide," meaning killing the environment. AGM chairman Andrew Mackenzie apologized to delegates after trying in vain to persuade the protesters to wait for … [Read more...] about Singing “We will, we will stop you,” climate change activists disrupt Shell shareholders meeting; some glued themselves to seats

ExxonMobil loses bid to nix climate change lawsuit

May 25, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Massachusetts’ highest court in the United States rejected a bid by ExxonMobil to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the state that accuses the oil giant of misleading the public about the role its fossil fuels play in causing climate change . The lawsuit filed in 2019 by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey alleges Exxon launched an effort, “reminiscent of the tobacco industry’s long denial campaign about the dangerous effects of cigarettes,” to deceive consumers and investors about climate change. Massachusetts’ Supreme Judicial Court upheld a lower court ruling on Tuesday (local time) that rejected the company’s argument that a state law shielded it from the lawsuit. A phone message seeking comment was left with Exxon, which has denied spreading disinformation about the contribution of fossil fuels to global warming. Prince William suggests free pint to encourage men to get a check-up

May 24, 2022 by news.sky.com

Prince William has suggested giving out a free pint in exchange for attending a check-up to encourage reluctant men to look after their health. The Duke of Cambridge appeared to be only half joking when he put forward the idea to help tackle a problem with men who sometimes dismiss changes in their body until it is too late. He said the free pint idea "could go down very badly, but it might be quite good". His comment came in the grounds of London's Royal Marsden Hospital when he toured the Man Van, a mobile clinic providing free health checks to men, especially black men who have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer than other ethnic groups. William asked what the symptoms of prostate cancer were, after admitting he did not know. Advertisement When told changes in toilet habits were one factor, he said: "It's tricky when it's so subtle." He told Fionnuala McCarthy, an advanced nurse practitioner: "I have an idea that could go down very … [Read more...] about Prince William suggests free pint to encourage men to get a check-up

Queen replaced for historic salute at Trooping the Colour for first time in 70 years

May 23, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

The Queen has further scaled back on her Platinum Jubilee celebrations after dropping out of the official salute at the Trooping of the Colour parade. Held every year to officially mark the Queen's birthday, this year's events take place on Thursday, June 2. Normally, Her Majesty would salute her personal troops – the Household Division – on Horse Guards Parade. But this year, royal fans were shocked as it was announced that Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne will be making the salute instead. The trio will also ride on the parade as colonels of the Welsh Guards, the Irish Guards and the Blues and Royals. One Twitter user commented: “It's a shame that for all of the years she made a point to do so, but because of all the controversy of who should and shouldn't be on the balcony, she won't appear either. The Daily Star has reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. On the same day the salute takes place, the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK … [Read more...] about Queen replaced for historic salute at Trooping the Colour for first time in 70 years

Food rescue feeds the hungry and cuts greenhouse gas emissions

May 24, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

David White/Stuff Northland Food Rescue manager Peter Nicholas says the organisation rescues food that would otherwise go to landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as feeding the hungry. Feeding people in need was the main aim of Northland Food Rescue /Whakaora Kai Taitokerau when the organisation was first seeded in Whangārei in 2016. But the benefits to the environment – by removing methane-producing food from landfills – quickly became obvious, community development worker Carol Peters said. The organisation now receives food, which would normally go to landfill, from 35 suppliers, including supermarkets, cafes, growers and pack houses across most of Tai Tokerau. The food is all weighed, so reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can be calculated. KLM faces court over ‘greenwashing’ adverts and offsetting scheme in first major challenge to aviation industry

May 24, 2022 by news.sky.com

Dutch airline KLM is being hauled up in court over accusations its "misleading" advertising amounts to greenwashing, in what is believed to be the world's first such case for the aviation industry. Environmental lawyers Client Earth will argue the airline's adverts and carbon offsetting scheme give a false impression of the sustainability of its flights and plans to tackle the pollution they cause. They claim this violates European consumer law. Campaigners Fossielvrij NL, also bringing the lawsuit, today handed KLM a letter notifying them of the action at the airline's AGM in Paris. "KLM's marketing misleads consumers into believing that its flights won't worsen the climate emergency," said Hiske Arts, campaigner at Fossielvrij NL. "But this is a myth." Unless KLM agrees to cease what campaigners describe as greenwashing, a Dutch court will begin examining the case. Sky News has contacted KLM for comment. The Unique Challenge of Raising Teenagers Right Now

May 24, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

Sign up for Molly’s newsletter, Wait, What?, here. The teenagers are not alright, but then again, neither are the adults. Pandemic life has been profoundly jarring, and every generation has felt it. I hear about people fighting on airplanes and an increase in violent crimes , then I attend my Alcoholics Anonymous meetings on Zoom and try to figure out why going back to “normal” is so hard. My 80-year-old mother never got COVID-19, but more than two years of sitting at home seems to have hastened her descent into dementia . Meanwhile, many young children are struggling to keep up with their education or even learn how to socialize . Now imagine what this moment must be like for teenagers. In December, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a warning : Pandemic-related death, fear, loneliness, and economic uncertainty have worsened “the unprecedented stresses young people already faced.” It makes sense. Between unfamiliar hormones and trying to figure out who you … [Read more...] about The Unique Challenge of Raising Teenagers Right Now
