ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president

FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?
There's nothing like watching an action-packed penalty shoot-out pitting players against goalkeepers, with either one leaving as the hero or the villain. At any World Cup, taking a successful penalty means being remembered for years, if not decades. The origins of the penalty The penalty kick as we know it today was introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB's) Law 14 in 1891. In accordance with the law, a player who purposefully trips, holds, or handles the ball within 12 yards of their own goal line is liable for a penalty. What is it like to take a penalty at a World Cup? The USA's all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan, put away 57 goals in 157 games and was America's top scorer in World Cup history. Landon told Football Now that taking a penalty in football's biggest tournament is a "nerve-wracking" experience. "You are very aware that this is a big moment not only for you and your team but your country," Donovan told Football Now. … [Read more...] about FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?

How New Zealand can build on the Lionesses’ pride at the Women’s World Cup
Sarai Bareman is the chief women's football officer at Fifa OPINION: As a proud Kiwi I can’t wait for the Fifa Women’s World Cup to come to New Zealand and Australia next year – and prove that the women’s game has finally come of age on the global stage. I still remember a speech I gave in New Caledonia over a decade ago when – shortly after taking over as head of the Samoan Football Federation – I spoke candidly about the challenges and gender bias I faced. I recalled how I was regularly told I had no idea what I was talking about, that my ideas and suggestions were routinely ignored and that I was laughed at simply because I was a woman. Joe Biden hails ‘important victory’ in Kansas to protect abortion rights
Voters in Kansas have resoundingly rejected a proposal to remove the right to abortion from the State Constitution, in a decision hailed as a catalyst for action by US President Joe Biden. The first test of voter sentiment after the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade , saw a major win for pro choice advocates, with a landslide victory of more than 20 percentage points. A result the other way would have allowed the Republican-controlled Legislature to tighten restrictions or ban the procedure outright , but now abortion will remain permitted up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. "This vote makes clear what we know: the majority of Americans agree that women should have access to abortion and should have the right to make their own health care decisions," US President Joe Biden said in a statement. After calling on Congress to "restore the protections of Roe" in federal law, Biden added, "And, the American people must continue to use their voices to protect the … [Read more...] about Joe Biden hails ‘important victory’ in Kansas to protect abortion rights
Trump to sanction China over human rights violations of Muslim group
President Donald Trump signed the Uyghur Human Rights Bill into law Wednesday at the White House, condemning the Chinese government for human rights abuses against the Muslim indigenous Uighur people and other Muslims in China. Estimates from the United Nations indicate China is holding over 2 million minority peoples in detention with many in indoctrination camps. Under the new law, the U.S. government is expected to levy financial sanctions and ban visas for Chinese officials involved with the persecution of Uighurs. In Wednesday remarks, Trump noted a section of the Act, which requires the White House to inform Congress 15 days before sanctions are lifted against a person, "purports to limit" his power to engage in diplomatic meetings with foreign government officials. "In some circumstances, this limitation could be inconsistent with my constitutional authorities to receive as diplomatic representatives certain foreign officials," Trump wrote. Citing that reason, Trump said the … [Read more...] about Trump to sanction China over human rights violations of Muslim group
Mahe Fonua blasts fixture schedule as second double header looms
MAHE Fonua has blasted rugby league’s bosses for putting players through a crazy fixture list. For the Castleford star believes fans may be robbed by not seeing stars at their very best, with 80 per cent the best they can feel. The Tigers face three games in 11 days – starting with tonight’s clash at Huddersfield – that will make or break their play-off chances. Next week sees the ludicrous second double header of the season, which sees Lee Radford’s men play next Thursday and on Bank Holiday Monday. And Fonua has hit out at the way players are being out through it after being told it would not happen again. He fumed: “I don’t think I’m allowed to say what I actually thought when I saw the second double header in the fixture list. “They want to speak about player welfare then they throw in two double headers. We came out of Covid-19 and they said they didn’t want any more of those short turnarounds. “Then they came out and did this, where they had a year or x amount … [Read more...] about Mahe Fonua blasts fixture schedule as second double header looms
“The starting point was zero. It was terrifying and exciting”, says Blues boss Hayes as she reflects on Chelsea reign
EMMA HAYES reckons ‘brain fog’ may have dimmed recollections of some of her earliest moments at the helm of Chelsea. But the Blues boss, 45, who marks her tenth year in charge of the WSL champs tomorrow has vivid memories of her first week and having no staff or office. The Camden-born head coach , who helped revolutionise the women’s game in England, recalls the initial sparse set-up when she took the job. A far cry from the investment that came eight years later, when the club broke the world transfer record for a women’s player, signing Pernille Harder from Wolfsburg for a fee reportedly in excess of £250,000. A decade ago, Hayes’s role was part-time. The Kingsmeadow gaffer juggled her managerial career with a job in her family’s currency exchange business Covent Garden FX. And Chelsea’s players were part-time too with their boss the only female manager in the league at the time. How Chelsea can spend £230m and splash out huge wages but NOT break any Financial Fair Play rules due to Covid-19
THE dire warnings of a financial crisis seem a million miles away from the Premier League reality.
