The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
ANALYSIS: For the first time since leaving office, former US president Donald Trump has started getting specific about what he would do if he wins a second term in the White House. The pitches he's made onstage over the past month in speeches from Washington, DC, to Dallas to Las Vegas are a stark contrast from ordinary stump speeches. He promises a break from American history if elected, with a federal government stacked with loyalists and unleashed to harm his perceived enemies. There has never been a potential candidate like Trump : a defeated former president whose followers attacked the Capitol, who still insists he never lost, and who openly pledges revenge on those he views as having wronged him. As his 2016 campaign and administration showed time and again, from the border wall to the Muslim ban, he and his aides worked furiously to translate rally slogans into official policy - whether or not there were legal or political barriers to overcome. And if Trump does … [Read more...] about The drastic plans Donald Trump is already promising for a second term as president
FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?
There's nothing like watching an action-packed penalty shoot-out pitting players against goalkeepers, with either one leaving as the hero or the villain. At any World Cup, taking a successful penalty means being remembered for years, if not decades. The origins of the penalty The penalty kick as we know it today was introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB's) Law 14 in 1891. In accordance with the law, a player who purposefully trips, holds, or handles the ball within 12 yards of their own goal line is liable for a penalty. What is it like to take a penalty at a World Cup? The USA's all-time leading scorer, Landon Donovan, put away 57 goals in 157 games and was America's top scorer in World Cup history. Landon told Football Now that taking a penalty in football's biggest tournament is a "nerve-wracking" experience. "You are very aware that this is a big moment not only for you and your team but your country," Donovan told Football Now. … [Read more...] about FIFA World Cup 2022: A record-breaking tournament for penalties?

How New Zealand can build on the Lionesses’ pride at the Women’s World Cup
Sarai Bareman is the chief women's football officer at Fifa OPINION: As a proud Kiwi I can’t wait for the Fifa Women’s World Cup to come to New Zealand and Australia next year – and prove that the women’s game has finally come of age on the global stage. I still remember a speech I gave in New Caledonia over a decade ago when – shortly after taking over as head of the Samoan Football Federation – I spoke candidly about the challenges and gender bias I faced. I recalled how I was regularly told I had no idea what I was talking about, that my ideas and suggestions were routinely ignored and that I was laughed at simply because I was a woman. Trump to sanction China over human rights violations of Muslim group
President Donald Trump signed the Uyghur Human Rights Bill into law Wednesday at the White House, condemning the Chinese government for human rights abuses against the Muslim indigenous Uighur people and other Muslims in China. Estimates from the United Nations indicate China is holding over 2 million minority peoples in detention with many in indoctrination camps. Under the new law, the U.S. government is expected to levy financial sanctions and ban visas for Chinese officials involved with the persecution of Uighurs. In Wednesday remarks, Trump noted a section of the Act, which requires the White House to inform Congress 15 days before sanctions are lifted against a person, "purports to limit" his power to engage in diplomatic meetings with foreign government officials. "In some circumstances, this limitation could be inconsistent with my constitutional authorities to receive as diplomatic representatives certain foreign officials," Trump wrote. Citing that reason, Trump said the … [Read more...] about Trump to sanction China over human rights violations of Muslim group

The Foreign Secretary added: "We need to do better we need to take on Whitehall." She said: “Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not going to drive economic growth. You raised national insurance even though people like me opposed it in Cabinet at the time, because we could have afforded to fund the NHS through general taxation. “The fact is that raising taxes at this moment will choke off economic growth, it will prevent us getting the revenue we need to pay off the debt.” Trending … [Read more...] about Tory leadership LIVE: Rishi fuming as Truss goes straight for him ‘Taxes will choke us!’
Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s determination should on no account be underestimated
One view of Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the business world is that he is an opportunist, an astute trader who likes to buy assets from distressed sellers at low-ball prices. That characterisation - that he is the chemicals industry's equivalent of rag-trade king Sir Philip Green - is rather unfair. Yes, Sir Jim is an exceptionally shrewd buyer of assets, but he has also shown himself to be a careful long-term investor and patient builder of businesses. But he did not get to become Britain's richest man by overpaying for things. That is the context into which news that the Ineos owner has expressed an interest in buying Manchester United should be placed. According to a report on Bloomberg yesterday, the Glazer family - which owns a controlling stake in the OId Trafford club - is considering selling a minority stake. A spokesman for Ineos subsequently made clear: "If the club are for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer." More on Manchester United … [Read more...] about Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s determination should on no account be underestimated
