Amber Heard calls for new libel trial against Johnny Depp after losing multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit
Amber Heard has asked a Virginia judge to throw out her losing verdict against Johnny Depp and order a new court case, claiming the judgment wasn't supported by evidence during the trial. Lawyers for the 36-year-old Aquaman star set out a 43-page motion, claiming Depp "proceeded solely on a defamation by implication theory, abandoning any claims that Ms Heard's statements were actually false". Calling the verdict "excessive", the document went on: "Ms Heard respectfully requests this court to set aside the jury verdict in favour of Mr Depp and against Ms Heard in its entirety, dismiss the complaint, or in the alternative, order a new trial." The court case came to an end on 1 June, with the jury finding that a 2018 article Heard wrote for The Washington Post , about her alleged experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse, was defamatory towards 59-year-old Depp. The jury of five men and two women reached the verdict unanimously, saying Depp had proven all the … [Read more...] about Amber Heard calls for new libel trial against Johnny Depp after losing multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit
Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Until I Met You is Amber Gill’s first novel for romantic publishers Mills & Boon . It follows Samantha on what was supposed to be the holiday of a lifetime with the imminent launch of her travel blog, her best friend’s wedding and – hopefully – her own marriage proposal. Until she finds herself on her way to Tobago – single. Read on for an exclusive peek at the opening of the novel. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is the pre-boarding announcement for flight BA209 to Miami, Florida. At this time we ask passenger Samantha Roberts to proceed to the British Airways check-in desk. Passenger Samantha Roberts, please proceed to the check-in desk.’ The insistent monotone roused Samantha from her meditation. She hopped to her feet, grabbed the handle of her carry-on suitcase and made a beeline for the desk. Tall, curvy, with cinnamon brown skin and a head of wild corkscrew curls, she stood out in most crowds. But the Heathrow departure gate was packed. She had to elbow … [Read more...] about Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Retro video games are a waste of everyone’s time and money – Reader’s Feature
A reader worries that retro gaming is become more mainstream and is encouraging publishers to take less risks in terms of making new games. I have watched the circus surrounding PS Plus Premium with some amusement for the last few weeks and, like everyone, I’ve been confused as to why it seems so rushed and poorly thought out. I was curious only out of a general interest though and not because I had any intention of paying for it. I realised a long time ago that I have no interest in retro games and I’m genuinely surprised to find anyone else does. A lot of it is nostalgia, I realise that, but I remember when Microsoft started pushing backwards compatibility and I was excited to put in some of my old OG Xbox discs and see how they looked and… I wish I hadn’t because it killed my sense of nostalgia over them. In short, they looked terrible and, in general, they played worse, even with enhancements. I’m not surprised that PS Plus Premium has relatively few PlayStation 1 … [Read more...] about Retro video games are a waste of everyone’s time and money – Reader’s Feature
Civilians: Our Next Problem
By R.W.GORDON THE movie at Camp Dehabilitation was packed, largely because the commanding officer had caused mess call to be sounded early and unit commanders had marched the resulting formations over in a body. The strays herded late into the front seats were those the MP’s had rounded up at the slop chute and Post Exchange. A captain, with enough ribbons on his chest to stifle incipient jeers, strode from the wings to the exact center of the stage, where he was handed a microphone by a corporal with a crew haircut. He said words into this microphone, to wit: — “The movie tonight, men, will be Hollywood Canteen. I know most of you have seen this picture, and that all of you except the adolescent autograph hounds are going to gag on a second dose of it, which is why we brought you over here before chow. You will consider this picture a training film, and will pay strict attention. Company officers will hold school in this subject upon your return to barracks. “We’ve got to … [Read more...] about Civilians: Our Next Problem
15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Columbia Pictures, Focus Features, Eureka Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Disney Even if you spent your summers on the couch watching reruns of The Price Is Right with your babysitter Sonia who smelled like sweat and cheese balls stuck in braces instead of going to summer camp, everyone knows what camp feels like, thanks to the tons of summer-camp movies and TV shows (remember Salute Your Shorts ?) that we’ve seen over the years. With summer fully here, we thought it time we revisit some of those camps. What makes a summer-camp movie great has less to do with the experience of applying bug spray and learning to swim in the lake, and more to do with celebrating childhood, rebellion, groups of scrappy outsiders pitted against the more popular, and like-minded people banding together to make something impossible and wonderful happen. (Most of them have first kisses, too, thanks to all those girlfriends at summer camp that the other kids … [Read more...] about 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Michael Schumacher to receive prestigious award as tragic F1 star is honoured
Michael Schumacher will receive the highest honour given out by his home state in Germany next month. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion is being recognised by the government of North Rhine-Westphalia at a ceremony on July 20. He will be the recipient of the State Prize, given out just once per year, marking all that he managed to achieve during an incredible career. Fittingly, the prize-giving ceremony will take place at Motorworld in the city of Cologne, which has become something of a shrine to Schumacher's racing legacy. The site is home to a swathe of memorabilia from his career, as well as the family's collection of F1 cars. Schumacher, who has been out of the public eye since his 2013 skiing accident, will not receive the award in person. Instead, his wife Corinna and children Mick and Gina are expected to accept the State Prize on his behalf, while former FIA president and close friend of the family Jean Todt will also be in attendance. North … [Read more...] about Michael Schumacher to receive prestigious award as tragic F1 star is honoured
