Germany starts COVID testing drive in bid to end lockdown

· January 4, 2021 ·

The days of shelling out €25 or even €50 ($30-60) for a rapid test may be numbered. The latest pandemic plan agreed to late Wednesday between Chancellor Angela Merkel and 16 state leaders, puts forward a complex, step-by-step guide to moving Germany out of lockdown. But little can happen without sufficient testing. The federal government is expected to start picking up the tab for rapid tests starting next week. Every person in Germany will be entitled to a weekly test, either from a test center, medical practice, or place of work, administered by trained personnel. Schools and day cares are a particular focus, as a means of getting kids and teachers safely and regularly back in the classroom. British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

· March 4, 2021 ·

British Airways passengers can now buy a discounted Covid-19 test kit to take abroad, which they can use ahead of their return to the UK. Under the current UK travel rules, anyone arriving in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of departure - which leaves travellers having to find somewhere abroad to get a test. However, British Airways is offering discounted antigen kits from Qured for £33, which passengers can buy before they travel. Passengers can order the kits to their UK address, which are designed to be portable so passengers can take them abroad. They can then schedule a video call with one of Qured's professional health advisors for when it's time to administer the test, so that they can be guided through the process and check that it's done correctly. Qured says that the verified results can be available after 20 minutes, and customers with a negative test will be able to download a 'fit to fly' certificate for their … [Read more...] about British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

COVID-19: Test and Trace ‘barely used’ check-in data from pubs and restaurants – with thousands not warned of infection risk

· March 4, 2021 ·

Check-in data from hundreds of millions of people who visited pubs, restaurants and hairdressers before lockdown was barely used by Test and Trace, according to a confidential report obtained by Sky News. The report admits that the failure of the £22bn service to use the data for alerts or contact tracing meant "thousands of people" were not warned they might be at risk of infection, "potentially leading to the spread of the virus." Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world To make matters worse, when coronavirus data from venues was used, public health officials encouraged pubs and restaurants to contact customers directly - a breach of data protection law which could leave businesses facing legal action. The report says that lack of guidance from Test and Trace for local public health teams on how to use the data left businesses "being asked to, or volunteering, to contact customers and visitors". ‘We feel like animals’: Border testing highlights broader tensions in EU’s COVID strategy

· March 4, 2021 ·

French residents who travel to Germany daily for work have reacted angrily after being told they must now get COVID tests every two days in order to cross the border. Germany introduced the measure earlier this week as infection rates remained high in the French border region of Moselle - but locals say it destroys the EU's principle of free movement. Sky News spoke to Laura Jarych, who lives in France but works in a German hotel just two minutes drive away. For decades she has made her journey uninterrupted - but the morning we meet she's had to queue in a line of vehicles for her test. She is furious. Live COVID updates from the UK and around the world "I am angry, very angry," Laura tells us. "And I think that the 20,000 people who are switching between the two countries in this area feel the same thing.
