The Royal Navy's plan to end its role in charge of tackling Channel migrants shows the Home Office's policy is "unravelling", the shadow home secretary has warned. Yvette Cooper warned that Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, is more interested in "chasing headlines" than tackling the illegal gangs that traffic people across the Channel. "Yet another Conservative policy on Channel crossings has completely unravelled while the number of lives put at risk in dangerous crossings is still rising," she said in a statement. "Conservative Ministers have repeatedly chased headlines rather than doing the hard work to tackle the problem. "The Navy was pulled into this because Home Office ministers were already failing and this comes on top of damning reports into failings in the Home Office management of Border Force, as well as hundreds of millions of pounds wasted on the unworkable Rwanda scheme. "Labour has set out a serious alternative plan to fund a new cell in the National Crime … [Read more...] about Royal Navy’s withdrawal from Channel migrant patrols ‘shows Home Office policy is unravelling’

Scottish islanders suffer disastrous summer after Nicola Sturgeon’s ferry failures
When Kate Blake decided to move to the Isle of Harris and set up an arts studio with her husband six years ago, she expected to cater for a steady flood of tourists seeking a peaceful getaway. Instead, the Covid crisis kept visitors away from the couple's Hebridean Design Company business for two years. And just as they were hoping for respite this summer, widespread ferry disruption described as an “island catastrophe” left the shop empty again. “We’re holding our breath waiting for the next disaster to happen,” says Blake. “Our takings for July were considerably down on last year when we were still under some Covid restrictions. "Everybody has noticed that the roads are quieter, there’s a lot of cancellations for self-catering holidays. [Ferry disruption] is going to have a long-term impact. It’s been a very disappointing year. "There have been instances where people have had to sleep in cars as they couldn’t get off the island.” The couple are far from alone. Gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.1% between April and June, the Office for National Statistics said. It is a big step down from the first quarter of the year, when GDP rose 0.8%. The data may not be the start of a recession – which is defined as two quarters of GDP decline – but experts are predicting the UK will slip into a recession later this year. “While we see increasing signs of underlying weakness in the economy, we expect a more severe downturn to take place only from towards the end of this year,” said Yael Selfin, chief economist at KPMG UK. The downturn is likely to start next quarter after Ofgem hikes the price cap on energy bills in October … [Read more...] about GDP falls 0.1% as Covid-19 vaccination programmes wind up

Eight months on from the attack and she is still recovering, spending three weeks receiving a skin graft in hospital , stitches and intense rehab to recover her walking. The Most Seductive and Poetic of Roxy Music, According to Bryan Ferry
“It’s strange how you develop an aesthetic that you like. It’s trial and error of finding things that you find appealing.” Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photo by Michael Putland/Getty Images The opening line of Roxy Music’s “ Do the Strand ” — saxophone blasting, synthesizer twisting — flies off the hinges with: “ There’s a new sensation, a fabulous creation .” Yes, the lyrics insist that it’s a danceable solution to teenage revolution. But I also happen to think it’s a perfect description of Bryan Ferry himself, the wildly debonair bard who served as the band’s front man and chief songwriter throughout their five decades together. Starting with their 1972 eponymous debut, Roxy’s whole ethos, held over from their art-school rearing, was that there weren’t any limitations to what was coming out of the studio — the complex arrangements, the absorbent influences. Sure, compose an ode to an inflatable doll. Why not throw in that oboe solo ? More of this melancholic … [Read more...] about The Most Seductive and Poetic of Roxy Music, According to Bryan Ferry
Boris Johnson wants to cut up to 91,000 civil service jobs
By Joseph Lee & Andre Rhoden-Paul Published 13 May comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The government wants to cut up to 91,000 civil service jobs to save money, the UK's top civil servant says. The aim is to return to 2016 staffing levels within three years, Cabinet Secretary Simon Case said in a letter to civil servants seen by the BBC. Downing Street said it had not ruled out a recruitment freeze or compulsory redundancies as part of planned cuts. A civil service union said the plan was "ill thought-out" and added strike action was "very much on the table". Mr Case, in the letter to civil servants on Thursday night, acknowledged the job cuts would be "challenging" and that civil service staffing had grown "substantially" since 2016, partly because of the pandemic. "We must consider how we can streamline our workforce … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson wants to cut up to 91,000 civil service jobs
