Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year host Stephen Mangan joked Worthing artist Phil Tyler had completed 76 portraits of actress Angela Griffin when he took part in this year’s competition. The professional artist, one of nine artists appearing on TV on Tuesday in the penultimate heat, actually did three paintings in the four hours allowed, which surprised and amused the actor and art-lover who presents the show with Joan Bakewell. A professional painter living in Lancaster has been chosen from hundreds to compete against eight other artists in the penultimate heat of this year’s Portrait Artist of the Year series. Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year (PAOTY) returns to TV screens this month (at 8pm on Tuesdays), with this episode showing on March 26 on Sky Arts and On Demand/NOW TV. Worthing artist Phil Tyler will be seen on TV screens when he competes in the penultimate heat of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2019. Phil, 53, has beaten hundreds of painters to earn a place in the seventh heats of the popular Sky Arts series produced by Storyvault Films. He will be one of nine artists appearing on the programme on Tuesday, March 26, at 8pm. The three celebrity sitters for the heat will be Angela Griffin, Gina McKeen and Jamael Westman, and Phil will be one of the three painting Angela, an actress who has appeared in Coronation Street and Lewis. Phil also took part in last year’s competition, when he painted Michael Ball and was shortlisted by the judges in the final three.He is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton and has been painting for most of his life.Phil describes himself as a ‘figurative’ artist who has worked with landscape, figure and still life over the past 25 years. Archant Rosso Emerald Crimson has gone from a steady career in marketing to competing on Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year programme in the space of five years. Rosso will appear on Sky's Portrait Artist of the Year on March 19. Picture: RossoBorn in Sicily but a resident of Stoke Newington since 2004, the 40-year-old painter trained briefly at Prince Drawing School and London Atelier of Representational Art (LARA), but is mainly self-taught.
