Pope Francis on Saturday led an Easter vigil service, baptising eight adults, including a formerly undocumented Nigerian migrant beggar who became a hero when he disarmed an Italian thief wielding a cleaver. The baptism took place during a long Holy Saturday or Easter Eve mass for some 10,000 people in St Peter’s Basilica. The church, the largest in Christendom, was dark at the start of the service before lights were turned on, signifying the passage from darkness to light when the Bible says Jesus rose from the dead. Pope francis news
THE Vatican has hit back at a popular journalist who claimed Pope Francis said hell does not exist. The Holy city issued a statement after the comments spread on social media, saying they did not properly reflect what the pope had said. Veteran atheist journalist Eugenio Scalfari, 93, who has become pally with The Pope, met the Holy Father recently and wrote up a long story that included a question-and-answer section at the end. The Vatican said the Pope did not grant him an interview and the article "was the fruit of his reconstruction" not a "faithful transcription of the Holy Father's words". Scalfari, the founder of Italy's La Repubblica newspaper, prides himself on not taking notes and not using tape recorders during his encounters with leaders and later reconstructing the meetings to create lengthy articles. According to his article in yesterday’s paper, he asked the pope where "bad souls" go and where they are punished. He quoted His Holiness as saying: "They are not … [Read more...] about Pope Francis sparks fury after ‘saying Hell does NOT exist’… but Vatican claims he was misquoted

BelfastTelegraph.co.uk The fervent hope of the priests and lay faithful in the diocese of Dromore will be that yesterday's formal arrival of retired bishop Dr Philip Boyce to take temporary charge of the troubled diocese on the explicit orders of the Pope, and the celebration of the Mass of Chrism in Newry Cathedral, will bring some semblance of order after a month of confusion and disarray. https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/news-analysis/dromore-diocese-with-just-20-parishes-and-fewer-than-30-priests-is-one-of-irelands-smallest-so-why-then-has-pope-francis-just-declared-it-as-being-unfit-for-purpose-36757884.html https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/news-analysis/article36757882.ece/ba105/AUTOCROP/h342/2018-03-30_opi_39711434_I2.JPG Email The fervent hope of the priests and lay … [Read more...] about Dromore diocese, with just 20 parishes and fewer than 30 priests, is one of Ireland’s smallest… so why then has Pope Francis just declared it as being unfit for purpose?
Pope Francis did not tell a journalist that “hell does not exist”, the Vatican has insisted. Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari published a report of an interview with the pontiff, and said he had asked him where “bad souls” go upon death, and where they are punished. The 93-year-old atheist, a co-founder of the La Reppublica newspaper, quoted Francis as saying: “They are not punished. Those who repent obtain God’s forgiveness and take their place among the ranks of those who contemplate him, but those who do not repent and cannot be forgiven disappear. Francis revealed the news as he bid farewell to prisoners at Rome’s Regina Coeli prison after he performed the Holy Thursday ritual of washing the feet of 12 people. The pope, who frequently tells inmates they need to keep hope alive, told them that they must clear their eyes every day so they can see and spread hope. He said cataracts often make it difficult to see, adding “at my age, for example, cataracts come and you don’t see reality well. Next year I have to have an operation”. Francis said the same thing happens with life, when disillusionment clouds the soul. He urged the inmates to do a daily cleansing of their view on life – a “cataract surgery for the soul” – so they can keep having hope.
