More info Trailing Labour in the polls after the damage inflicted by Boris Johnson ’s resignation and a divisive leadership contest, a momentous task awaited Ms Truss in Downing Street. However, after just a month in office the Government is already in the midst of a polling crisis. Since the unveiling of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng ’s tax-slashing Growth Plan – which included a subsequently reversed provision to scrap the highest 45 percent rate of tax – the Tories find themselves further behind in the polls than ever before. Home Secretary Suella Braverman has attacked Tory MPs who she claims "staged a coup" against the prime minister over her plan to scrap the 45p tax rate. Speaking at a Telegraph event at the Conservative Party conference, Ms Braverman said she had been "in favour" of the policy and was "disappointed" by the government's U-turn. But while she said she understood why Liz Truss and her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng had changed direction, she was more "disappointed" by those in her party who had "undermined the authority of our prime minister in an unprofessional way". Ms Braverman also said she was "sitting on the fence" on whether to raise benefits in line with inflation, which is becoming the latest row within the Tory Party . But she warned that a "Benefit Street culture is a feature of modern Britain", and the government needed to use "a bit more stick" to get "a stubborn core who see welfare as the go to option" back into work. Liz Truss will on Wednesday warn that there will be further disruption as she fights to deliver economic growth. After a turbulent week , the Prime Minister will acknowledge that not everyone will be in favour of her reforms - but will insist that an end to “drift and delay” is necessary to protect jobs and public services. After facing days of opposition to her tax-cutting agenda, she will launch an attack on what she will call the “anti-growth coalition” - arguing that her “new approach” will “unleash the full potential of our great country”. In her first Tory Conference speech as party leader she will say: “We need to do things differently. Whenever there is change, there is disruption. Not everyone will be in favour. But everyone will benefit from the result - a growing economy and a better future. That is what we have a clear plan to deliver.” After talking about her experiences growing up in Leeds and Paisley, Ms Truss will add: “This is a great country. But I know that … [Read more...] about Disruption is the price of success, insists Liz Truss

More info A report by The Guardian states that the minister has refused to sign off the department for culture's budget which forms part of a wider Whitehall recovery plan to get tourists back to the UK. This, it says, is despite him agreeing to a £4 million VisitBritain campaign. The plight is said to be designed to attract visitors from key international markets including India, China, Australia, Japan and Canada to boost visitor numbers in the wake of the pandemic. But, according to the title, Rees-Mogg is tipped to take over as business secretary under Liz Truss and is understood to be sceptical of government advertising campaigns in general. … [Read more...] about Campaign to bring back tourists ‘BLOCKED’ by Brexit minister
As a front-line politician, few experiences can be as frightening as beginning to lose the ability to form words. “It was quite an odd week,” Thérèse Coffey recalls with understatement. The new Health Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister is still settling into the briefs handed to her by her friend Liz Truss, a double role that confirms her centrality to the Government. But speaking to The Telegraph in her first newspaper interview since the promotion, Ms Coffey begins by looking back to spring 2018, when she saw the NHS at its best. The Tory MP for Suffolk Coastal and, at the time, environment minister had caught an ear infection and had it diagnosed. But as the days wore on, the problem would not clear. “I was still able to function, this is the issue,” she recalled. “I did a Westminster Hall debate. I gave a speech. I was just in a lot of pain and I knew something wasn't right. “It was thanks to my sister phoning the A&E in St Thomas’s to say: ‘I've never, ever known … [Read more...] about Therese Coffey opens the door to more foreign nurses to plug NHS staff shortage
In power for just 28 days - and for 10 of them politics was paused following the death of the Queen - it has been the worst possible start for Liz Truss. A (mini) budget unveiling £45bn of tax cuts without a fiscal framework, precipitating a £65bn emergency bond buying programme by the Bank of England to protect pension funds. The pound tanked, 1,000 mortgage deals were withdrawn from the markets in anticipation of an interest rates spike. And then a prime minister who was not the lady for turning, has announced a huge policy U-turn. So the question for the new prime minister was really a question of leadership - and judgement. How bad is it and, crucially, can Liz Truss win back control? She never had emphatic backing from the parliamentary party anyway - Rishi Sunak was initially their first choice.
