People across the North West of England have gone to the ballot box again - this time to vote in their Members of European Parliament . A total of eight seats in the European Parliament are up for grabs in the area which covers Cheshire , Cumbria, Greater Manchester , Lancashire and Merseyside. Before 1999 these were the EU constituencies of Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Wirral, Cumbria, Lancashire North, Greater Manchester Central, Greater Manchester East, Greater Manchester West, Lancashire Central, Lancashire South, Merseyside East and Wigan, Merseyside West, and parts of Staffordshire West and Congleton. Polls closed at 10pm on Thursday May 23 with the count taking place on Sunday May 26. Results are expected to be announced after midnight. Hello and welcome to our coverage of the European elections 2019 results. Voters went to the polls on Thursday to choose who they want to represent them in EU parliament. Across the European Union , 751 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will be elected. That includes 73 MEPs from the UK, with three of those representing the North East region - check out our full list of candidates here. Other countries hold their votes on different days, and the election continues until Sunday, May 26 across the EU. Sunderland City Council is overseeing the election across the region. This year's European elections are well underway as people across the country go to the polls. Voters in the North West will mark their ballot paper against their chosen party and its MEPs who they think will best represent their views in the European Parliament. As well as the North West region, the UK is divided into a further 11 regions, where a total of 751 Members of the European Parliament will be elected for a five-year term. Although how much time they'll actually serve of that term is still unknown. Will there be an exit poll on Thursday night? We'll be left without any insight or exit poll on Thursday night - despite polling stations closing at 10pm. This is because although the UK is voting on Thursday, along with the Netherlands, the rest of the countries in the European Union are yet to cast their votes. In the UK we will go to the polls on Thursday May 23 to vote in the EU elections. However, the elections concerns multiple countries - all of them in the European Union - which for the time being, still includes the United Kingdom. So, while we vote on the 23rd in the UK, the election goes on until the 26th in some other countries. The election results will then be reported live as they are declared on Sunday 26 May 2019. With counting starting at 10pm on Sunday night, results will be announced later that evening and following morning. What happens after results are announced? In the days immediately following the results, the new Members of the new Parliament work to form political groups. The political composition of the new Parliament may require new allegiances to be formed and new groups may emerge. We've already been to the polling stations once this month for the local elections - and we will have to go again to cast our vote in the European elections 2019. With the big delay on Brexit and now an extension until the end of October, we’ll now have a say in the EU parliamentary polls in voting for which party and its candidates we’d like to represent us. Some may question why we’re even taking part when we are trying to leave the EU, however if we don’t vote now, the UK would be in breach of its democratic obligations. A cross-party Brexit deal still needs to pass Parliament, and if it does go ahead as planned before the October deadline, who knows how long it will take for the EU divorce deal to officially come to terms?
