Co-leader Patrick Harvie said it would be the only option if both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Supreme Court block the request. Opposition parties have criticised the strategy and its timing. It comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week proposed holding a referendum on 19 October 2023. The UK government said it would examine the first minister's proposals, but stressed that its position that "now is not the time" for another referendum had not changed. Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds
Parents have resorted to dipping into their children ’s savings to afford to pay for the soaring cost of household bills , a poll has found. According to a survey for The Telegraph , Britons are lifting £8.5m a day from their children as the sprialling rate of inflation - which recently hit a 40-year high - continues to top up already sky-high domestic costs. The poll revealed that families had withdrawn almost £300 on average from their children’s savings so far this year. It found a third of the 2,000 people questioned had raided their children’s funds this year and suggested a total of £1.4bn has been withdrawn so far. Almost a quarter said they had extracted the funds to pay for increasingly expensive food shops, one in four said they had done so to help pay for exorbitant energy bills, while 6 per cent said they used their children’s savings to pay for travel. More than a quarter said they had either reduced the amount they were keeping aside for … [Read more...] about Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds
Pennsylvania Becomes the Land of Oz
Pennsylvania Republicans have rallied behind a celebrity former TV host and political neophyte, choosing a charismatic convert to conservatism over a rival who espoused a purer form of the party’s modern doctrine. The above sentence could have been written in 2016, when Donald Trump defeated Senator Ted Cruz in Pennsylvania’s presidential primary on his way to receiving the GOP nomination. But tonight it’s a description of Mehmet Oz, America’s favorite living-room M.D., who has finally won the Keystone State’s Republican nomination for Senate with help from the former president. Oz narrowly topped the financier David McCormick after McCormick unexpectedly conceded in the middle of a statewide recount. Oz now faces John Fetterman, the progressive lieutenant governor who defeated Representative Conor Lamb for the Democratic nomination despite suffering a stroke four days before the May 17 primary. Trump was two-for-two in his Republican endorsements in Pennsylvania, as … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania Becomes the Land of Oz

Related articles Man dies in M4 police incident Thick black smoke billows into sky as huge fire breaks out in London The strategic decision to launch the 2024 campaign from Florida is considered to be an opportunity for Mr Trump to outshine DeSantis on his own turf. Current data from GOP voters in New Hampshire shows the two rivals are almost equal in support with De Santis at 39 percent and Trump with 37 percent. The former President’s concerns about facing his opponent were highlighted in a interview where he said: “I don’t know if Ron is running, and I don’t ask him. “It’s his prerogative. Max Verstappen lets his driving do the talking in Canada
Max Verstappen delivered a strong response to his recent critics by completing a practice double for the Canadian Grand Prix . Verstappen’s crash last time out in Monaco marked his fifth big mistake from six rounds, and he arrived in North America threatening to “headbutt someone” following a series of questions about his accident-prone campaign. ‘Grave concerns’ for future of health workforce amid staffing crisis
JASON DORDAY/STUFF Health Minister Andrew Little and Associate Health Minister (Māori Health) Peeni Henare have formally launched two new health entities at AUT in Manukau, south Auckland. There are “grave concerns” for the future of the health workforce and “urgent” action is needed to address the staffing crisis , a surgeons' group says. The Association of General Surgeons has sent an open letter to Health Minister Andrew Little, saying the staffing shortfall is “profoundly reducing” doctors’ ability to deliver care. President Dr Rowan French, said both acute and planned surgeries in public hospitals had been reduced as a result. “Most hospitals are already close to, or at over 100% occupancy.
