Nearly two-thirds of Taiwan 's public remains unconcerned that China's recent military drills could lead to a wider conflict across the Taiwan Strait, where Western analysts are already describing an unfolding crisis. The Taiwanese Defense Ministry released daily updates as it tracked large numbers of Chinese aircraft and naval vessels in its surrounding sea and airspace, with record numbers crossing the unofficial, but previously observed, median line in the Taiwan Strait. Between August 4 to 11, Chinese warplanes flew more than 300 sorties around the island, which Beijing claims as its own. Chinese officials framed the war games as a direct response to Nancy Pelosi , after the House speaker visited Taiwan between August 2 and 3, and met with democratically elected leaders including President Tsai Ing-wen. Her defiance of private and public warnings landed her and her family on Beijing's growing blacklist of Western politicians. However, despite what appeared to be … [Read more...] about China military drills post-Pelosi leave Taiwan unfazed, poll suggests

Liz Truss extends lead over Rishi Sunak in Tory leadership poll
Liz Truss has extended her lead over Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race , according to a poll of party members by YouGov. The new survey put Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, on 60 per cent of the vote and Mr Sunak, the former chancellor, on 26 per cent. That lead of 34 percentage points among decided Tory members is bigger than the previous YouGov poll last month , which put Ms Truss 18 points ahead. But doubts remain about the reliability of Tory membership polling. Far fewer such polls are carried out than general voter polling before elections. Sir John Curtice, a leading polling expert, said that Mr Truss is likely to hold a “narrower” lead than thought after one survey put her only five points ahead of Mr Sunak. Writing for The Telegraph , he cautioned against reading too much into the limited number of studies into the attitudes of Conservative Party members that have been carried out. His remarks came as other experts warned that polls of party members are … [Read more...] about Liz Truss extends lead over Rishi Sunak in Tory leadership poll

Chris Skidmore has become the first Conservative MP to publicly switch his backing from Rishi Sunak to Liz Truss in the in the Tory leadership race. Announcing his defection in an article for The Telegraph, Mr Skidmore said he had became “increasingly concerned” by the Sunak campaign’s “consistently changing position ” on policy. The switch is especially noteworthy as Mr Skidmore, one of the most prominent Tory supporters of Net Zero , is seen as being on the party’s liberal wing, while many of Ms Truss’s most prominent backers are on the traditionalist Right. US Senate passes Biden’s $454bn Inflation Reduction Act
US Senators voted through the night to push through the Inflation Reduction Act – a flagship measure tackling climate change, tax and healthcare. After a marathon session the bill was finally passed on Sunday night, with the aid of vice president Kamala Harris exercising her casting vote. The bill, which still has to clear the House of Representatives, had been heavily scaled down from the $3.5 trillion package which was presented to Congress in the early days of the Biden administration. President Joe Biden and his allies were forced to ditch many of their pledges because of the opposition of two Democrats – Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema – in the evenly divided Senate. The $454 billion (£376 billion) should be on the president’s desk within a few weeks. Although if it is far more modest than Democrats had hoped – the passage of a key bill is a welcome boost for Mr Biden, whose poll ratings have plummeted over the past year. It is estimated that the climate … [Read more...] about US Senate passes Biden’s $454bn Inflation Reduction Act
