But the officer, who was getting out of his marked squad car, was able to return fire and wounded the suspect, who also is in critical condition, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said. Neither the names of the officer, who has been with the department about 1½ years, nor the suspect were released. "In my opinion, I believe he was ambushed,'' Police Chief Jeri Williams said of the officer. DeKALB – Whether it was with the U.S. military or within various roles in the city of DeKalb, Donald P. Schoo, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 93, served with distinction for most of his adult life. Schoo served in a number of military campaigns in World War II, including the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, and became known for sharing stories of his service with local students. For his service, Schoo earned a Combat Medal and two Bronze Stars from the United States and was also was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor by then-president of France, Jacques Chirac, in 2004. Rather than shy away from his military service, Schoo donated his time to history classes at Kishwaukee College, where he would share his experiences. In doing so, Schoo received an honorary degree from the college in 2011. A former police officer who served in Bristol for more than 25 years has died suddenly from blood poisoning. Kevin Phillips, who started his police career in South Gloucestershire but later transferred to north Bristol, died earlier this month after contracting sepsis. The 61-year-old, a father of four, joined Avon and Somerset Police in 1990 and spent 26 years with the force before retiring. Following his retirement, he was elected chairman of the regional Police Federation branch and went on to stand as an independent in the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) election of 2016. He secured more than 22,000 votes but came last in the election, which was won by current PCC Sue Mountstevens.
