Police could suspend 101 non-emergency number because of budget cuts
Police forces across the country could start suspending the non-emergency 101 service to cope with an influx of calls, it has been warned. Bedfordshire Police announced a “suspension” of 101 after a spike in 999 calls last week, in what could be the first move of its kind. But The Independent has learned there is no requirement for police forces to inform authorities or the public if they take the same decision. Suspensions of 101 are not formally recorded by either the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) or the Home Office, meaning that the scale of the practice is unknown. John Apter, chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, called for full monitoring to be brought in amid a rise in violent crime. “I can see more forces starting to suspend 101, and I think they should if it means we can prioritise the here-and-now emergencies,” he told The Independent. “I think they will be forced into that position. U.S. orders non-emergency government personnel to leave Nicaragua
The U.S. government on Friday ordered non-emergency government personnel to leave Nicaragua and advised travelers to reconsider going to the country. A State Department travel advisory that was updated Friday said U.S. government personnel in the country must stay in their homes and "avoid unnecessary travel between sundown and sunrise." Nicaragua has been rocked by protests and a violent crackdown by authorities since April, when demonstrations began demanding President Daniel Ortega's exit from office. Ortega's government has likened such demands to an attempted coup. A report last month from a team of independent investigators said at least 212 people have been killed in clashes. Talks aimed at resolving the crisis have repeatedly broken down. June was the busiest month ever recorded for 999 calls to West Midlands Police
Police dealt with a record breaking amount of emergency calls during June. Last month was the highest ever recorded with a jaw dropping 66,988 emergency calls for service. The high number of calls comes in at around 10 per cent of the entire 665,331 emergency calls that West Midlands Police received in 2016-2017. A mixture of hot weather and World Cup football games are thought to be behind the increased demand. Even with an unprecedented amount of calls the West Midlands Police contact team still managed to keep an impressive average answer time of 12 seconds. Lyndsey Swallow, a West Midlands Police leader, tweeted: “66988 999 calls in June. The highest EVER recorded to WMPolice. 12 months of huge progress to keep control. Hard work for all WMPContact” In another tweet the WMP leader shared her shock at the amount of demand. She said: “Never seen volumes like it.
