This was not a night for galácticos, old or new. At a balmy Parc Des Princes Paris Saint-Germain simply overran Real Madrid, pulling apart the hastily-stitched seams of Zinedine Zidane’s team and producing surely the most coherent and powerful performance of Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge. It felt like a humiliation at times – and by the end perhaps something more, a Viking funeral for a team, an era, a way of trying to win. As the seconds ran out there was even the unexpected sight of the Paris full‑backs Juan Bernat and Thomas Meunier bearing down on the Real goal, the midfield crumbling away like a sheet of millefeuille pastry, the defence drowning in all that space. Bernat took the ball from Meunier. Meunier took it back from Bernat. Meunier might have paused to drink in a most unexpected moment in his own career, but instead steered the ball into the corner of the Real net with a brusque, merciful haste to complete a 3-0 win. And make no mistake, Real … [Read more...] about Ángel Di María double helps PSG ease to win against Real Madrid

What does Zinedine Zidane dream about? Cute cats? No, it’s not his style. Cakes? He’s too svelte. Scary monsters? He’s 47 years old for heaven’s sake! No, according to reports in Spain, Zizou goes to bed at night and “dreams of” N’Golo Kanté. The Real Madrid manager believes signing the ultimate defensive midfield pivot will open up a new glittering pathway towards untold glories at the Bernabéu. Kanté won’t come cheap, though, so Florentino Pérez will strap £86m to James Rodríguez and dangle him in front of Stamford Bridge in the hope that Chelsea beancounters bite. Another midfielder who may be on the move is Ivan Rakitic, who has fallen so far down the pecking order at Barcelona that he’s probably making tea for Frenkie de Jong as you read this sentence. It says here that Juventus and Manchester United are interested, though with the Italian champions having around 756 available central midfielders … [Read more...] about Football transfer rumours: Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté to join Real Madrid?
HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, THIS IS IT It is the grandest rivalry in English football. It’s just a pity that Manchester United v Liverpool matches regularly resemble those mid-2000s Birmingham v Bolton clashes that not even Sky Sports Premier League finds airspace to replay. Each of the last three seasons has featured a 0-0 draw in a fixture that gets the loudest fanfare for the most diminished returns. By now, you know the drill for the buildup: a Jimmy Nesbitt voiceover or a local poet delivering Vogon verse atop a soft-focus glimpse of life in the north west’s two great cities, soundtracked by either Pete Wylie or the Stone Roses, depending on which is the home side.roared Ed. The briefing has been broad. Poor, poor David Moyes had zero chance of success, it has been admitted. Daley Blind, yes Daley Blind, that Dutch chap who didn’t cost much and was actually quite decent in midfield, central defence and at left-back, was exactly the wrong … [Read more...] about The Glazer family, that real-life version of Succession season four
A late strike from their prolific goalscorer Charlyn Corral earned Atlético Madrid a precious away goal, and a draw, against Manchester City. City took the lead through Janine Beckie before Corral, who scored 86 goals in 117 appearances for Levante before joining Atlético, ensured the Blues face a tough return leg. The most alluring tie of the round did not quite live up to that billing. In Lauren Hemp, who was making her third appearance of the season after a spell out with a shoulder injury, though, City had the brightest player on the pitch. The 19-year-old ran Carmen Menayo and centre-back Aïssatou Tounkara ragged, and it was the fallout from her low effort which was saved by the Netherlands goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal that led to the goal. A poor clearance saw City drive forward again and Keira Walsh played a ball through the middle which took a deflection but ran kindly for Beckie, who powered it coolly into the roof of the net with her first touch. It was her … [Read more...] about Charlyn Corral gives Atlético Madrid upper hand against Manchester City

The £350,000-a-week star has been omitted from three matchday squads in a row and boss Unai Emery is no longer making excuses, saying other players 'deserve it more'. Parlour, who played for the Gunners for 12 years, weighed into the debate and agreed with Emery's candid assessment, saying that Arsenal have 'lots' of better options now.
