The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has risen above Ryanair and two power plants in a ranking of the EU's biggest carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters in 2019. MSC is now in 7th position and Ryanair in 8th on the top 10 list, which is based on European Union data. Six German plants and two Polish plants fill the eight remaining spaces. The ranking was put together by think tank Transport & Environment (T&E) and estimated that MSC produced 10.72 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019, while Ryanair emitted an estimated 10.53 million tonnes. MSC and Ryanair both release less CO2 than the largest coal-fired power plants in the list. The think tank endorsed the inclusion of shipping in the EU emissions trading system (ETS) ahead of a vote on the matter in the European Parliament on Monday. By making power plants, factories and airlines pay for their pollution, the ETS aims to reduce CO2 emissions. Huffing and puffing over HFCs won’t cut global warming
What a wonderful environmental parable is now unfolding around a meeting of 150 countries held last week in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, to discuss an international ban on yet another greenhouse gas, to aid their wish to halt global warming. Back in 1987, when there was a huge panic over the hole opening up in the ozone layer over the Antarctic, 197 countries signed the Montreal Protocol, the world’s first major environmental treaty, agreeing to phase out the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), used in everything from refrigerators to hair-sprays, which were supposedly causing the ozone to disappear. How far this has actually been responsible for the fact that the ozone hole has recently been shrinking is still a matter of scientific dispute. But CFCs have been widely replaced by hydrofluorocrabons (HFCs), used in refrigeration and air-conditioning, which, because they are short-lived, were viewed not to be damaging to the ozone layer. However the penny has finally dropped … [Read more...] about Huffing and puffing over HFCs won’t cut global warming
UK weather: Drought conditions could last into next year
Drought conditions could last into next year, experts predicted as water levels in reservoirs across England and Wales dropped to record lows. An official drought is expected to be declared across the worst-hit areas of southern England at a meeting between ministers and the water industry on Friday after the region had its driest July since 1836. The announcement could bring more hosepipe bans , see canals ordered to close to boats, and prompt extra measures to protect wildlife. On Thursday, experts said only “exceptional rainfall” in the south and east of England over the autumn and winter would ensure that water resources returned to normal before 2023, meaning restrictions could last into next year. “The autumn-winter period as a whole will be critical to dictating what the water resources position will be as we go into 2023,” said Jamie Hannaford, a hydrologist at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, which advises the Government. A multi-year drought would … [Read more...] about UK weather: Drought conditions could last into next year
