Picture: KEN MEARS Archant Our planet is threatened by man made climate change, extreme weather events, droughts and floods, melting ice caps, rising sea levels, poor air quality, and plastic pollution. Yet at the G20 summit in Japan leaders of the largest economies failed to agree because US President Trump blocked new commitments. In the European Union, and this country we are doing much better. In May parliament declared a climate emergency. You may also want to watch: In June the government announced a target to end all greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the first major economy to do so. Many climate campaigners would like to do this even earlier. But even this target will require big changes. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless in the face of the challenges we face as a planet but it was hope I felt in March when I watched young people, many from Camden, fill the streets around parliament demanding action on the climate crisis. They broke through the news agenda and changed the political debate in this country. Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is celebrated by people in different ways from planting trees to cleaning up local beaches and organizing meetings. This year, the theme of World Environment Day is "Battle with Air Pollution." As our planet battles with global warming as well pollution of all kinds, this special day is highly important. According to the data of the World Health Organization (WHO), nine out of every 10 people breathe polluted air which is caused by fossil fuels. In Turkey, approximately 30,000 people lose their lives due to health problems related to air quality. Lung diseases caused by fossil fuel usage increase every year as well. Residents made an impassioned plea to councillors to save trees from a development.A presentation was made to a Newark and Sherwood District Council meeting by Katie Greenfield, asking the councillors to save the trees bordering the site of The Bearings, on Bowbridge Road and Lime Grove.She also presented the council with a petition containing 736 signatures from residents appealing for the trees to be saved.It included 25 pages of comments from residents, some of which stated: “Please keep the trees for our wellbeing” and “the trees are a haven for wildlife, which will be even more critical once the site is developed.”A planning application from Countryside Properties was approved in January by the council’s planning committee for 12 one-bedroom flats, 33 two-bedroom houses, 13 three-bedroom houses and four four-bedroom houses to be built on The Bearings site.Perrmission was also given for eight trees to be felled as part of the development, under the … [Read more...] about Residents plea to save trees
