Angry Dutch farmers vow to cause more protest chaos than ever
Dutch farmers have vowed to cause chaos in the country with their “hardest demonstrations ever” after talks over government climate change targets ended in deadlock. The Dutch government sparked fury with its proposals to curb livestock numbers by a third in order to slash nitrogen emissions . In recent months, the country has been brought to its knees, with farmers blocking roads, airports, supermarket distribution centres , as well as manure sprayed at police officers and hay bales torched in dirty protests. The mass disruption led the Dutch government to appoint a mediator in the hope of brokering a pact with the farmers to curb future protests. But the militant Farmers Defence Force, which represents eight agricultural organisations, some 95 per cent of the industry, was locked out of the first round of negotiations earlier this week with Prime Minister Mark Rutte. 'You can prepare for the toughest demonstrations ever' Following the talks on Friday, the group said … [Read more...] about Angry Dutch farmers vow to cause more protest chaos than ever
F1 supremo hints at handing Michael Masi lifeline despite Abu Dhabi debacle
The F1 career of former race director Michael Masi may not yet be over if FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem's comments are anything to go by. Masi, 44, took over the role in 2019 following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting. He was still in post for the dramatic 2021 title decider in Abu Dhabi, when he suddenly became one of the most divisive figures in the sport. Masi came in for a siege of criticism for altering his initial safety car instructions to drivers during the final laps at the Yas Marina. The Australian, under pressure from Red Bull boss Christian Horner , fast-tracked matters in order to ensure one final lap of racing. It gifted Max Verstappen the chance to overtake Lewis Hamilton and take the chequered flag, crowning him world champion in sensational fashion . Mercedes promptly launched two separate protests into what transpired, but both were dismissed by a panel of race stewards. Toto Wolff and co then immediately launched notice of intent to … [Read more...] about F1 supremo hints at handing Michael Masi lifeline despite Abu Dhabi debacle
Fight breaks out in Azerbaijan Grand Prix paddock as young driver’s dad slapped with ban
A Formula 2 driver has been slapped with a fine after his father pushed and threatened another racer's trainer in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix paddock. Cem Bolukbasi was ordered to pay £4,284.55 to the FIA as a result of his father's behaviour on Sunday. According to an official report released by motorsport's governing body, Yavuz Bolukbasi "provoked a heated verbal exchange" with the trainer of fellow racer Roy Nissany. It happened after the two drivers were involved in an on-track incident earlier in the day. Bolukbasi Snr, along with his son's manager, made their way to the paddock tent of Nissany's team before losing his temper after believing he had heard a derogatory comment made towards his son. That was when Mr Bolukbasi is alleged to have begun shouting, causing Nissany's trainer to get involved. The FIA's report said: "There was some pushing and physical contact between the father and the trainer," before adding that "no punches were exchanged and the unwanted guests … [Read more...] about Fight breaks out in Azerbaijan Grand Prix paddock as young driver’s dad slapped with ban
Mercedes get their wish as FIA steps in to reduce porpoising after Lewis Hamilton agony
The FIA will step in to reduce the porpoising affecting Formula 1 cars this season "in the interests of safety", the sport's governing body has announced. Many teams across the grid have struggled with the problem this season, with a new aerodynamic design of the cars having an unfortunate side effect. The bouncing of the cars has not only affected the performance of some cars, but it has caused discomfort for drivers. Several have now come out to suggest changes need to be made to car designs in the interest of safety. That follows a particularly bumpy Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton the most affected as his bouncing Mercedes left him with severe back pain. His team-mate George Russell has also been particularly vocal about this issue, having suffered a lot of porpoising in his own car over the Baku weekend. They have been supported by the likes of Ferrari 's Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren in calling for the drivers' safety and … [Read more...] about Mercedes get their wish as FIA steps in to reduce porpoising after Lewis Hamilton agony
Lewis Hamilton backed for “surprise” British Grand Prix success – if allowed to race
Lewis Hamilton could shock favourites Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc at Silverstone this weekend, with an F1 icon tipping the Mercedes star to "surprise" at the British Grand Prix . No-one in the history of Formula 1 has won this race more times than Hamilton, who is the real fans' favourite at Silverstone on account of his unprecedented success there. But a record ninth victory looks unlikely this weekend, given the performance chasm between Mercedes and front runners Red Bull . Hamilton and George Russell have managed to produce some impressive results this season given all the difficulties they have faced, but haven't come close to a race win. Defending champion Verstappen has been dominant in that regard, while Leclerc has also been in regular contention – when his Ferrari has been reliable. But Mercedes are bringing car upgrades with them to Silverstone this weekend , that they hope will be able to help them get closer to the two teams ahead of them. … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton backed for “surprise” British Grand Prix success – if allowed to race
Lewis Hamilton backs down in jewellery feud with FIA to avoid British GP ban
Lewis Hamilton appeared to back down in the Formula 1 jewellery row by removing his nose stud ahead of Friday's practice sessions. But it is clear the seven-times world champion is exasperated by the ongoing clampdown and will have talks with the governing body’s boss Mohamed Ben Sulayem in a bid to reach some sort of compromise. Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA , has decided the sport’s long-standing jewellery ban for drivers – which has been largely ignored for many years – should be enforced, with possible sanctions to include being suspended from a race. Hamilton thinks the edict is ridiculous and has taken to turning up for media duties wearing as much jewellery as possible. He argued that one nose stud would be particularly difficult to remove and that led to a series of medical exemptions being granted for previous Grands Prix. While he was pictured arriving at Silverstone with the stud clearly visible, it was gone when he put on his helmet for the first practice … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton backs down in jewellery feud with FIA to avoid British GP ban
University students demand philosophers such as Plato and Kant are removed from syllabus because they are white
They are said to be the founding fathers of Western philosophy, whose ideas underpin civilised society. But students at a prestigious London university are demanding that figures such as Plato, Descartes and Immanuel Kant should be largely dropped from the curriculum because they are white. The student union at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) insists that when studying philosophy “the majority of philosophers on our courses” should be from Africa and Asia. The union said it is part of wider campaign to “decolonise” the university, as it seeks to “address the structural and epistemological legacy of colonialism”. It comes after education leaders warned that universities will be forced to pander to the demands of “snowflake” students, however unreasonable they might be. Under proposed reforms to higher education, the Government wants to place student satisfaction at the heart of a new ranking system, but critics fear it could undermine academic … [Read more...] about University students demand philosophers such as Plato and Kant are removed from syllabus because they are white
Universities warned over ‘snowflake’ student demands
Universities will be forced to pander to the demands of "snowflake" students if controversial changes to the ranking system are approved, education leaders have warned. The Government faces a cross-party revolt in the Lords this week over proposed reforms to higher education, which include placing student satisfaction at the heart of a new ranking system. It is feared that this will lead to a "fantastically dangerous" culture where authorities will give in to student demands, however unreasonable they may be. "Safe space" and "no platform" movements have swept across campuses including a campaign to ban Germaine Greer from giving a speech over her "offensive" comments. Baroness Wolf, a professor at King’s College London (KCL), warned: “Universities are increasingly nervous about doing anything that will create overt dissatisfaction among students because they are being told that student satisfaction is key. “It has had a real effect on the willingness of universities to … [Read more...] about Universities warned over ‘snowflake’ student demands
This has been the most extraordinary General Election since 1918
The General Election on Thursday was the most extraordinary in British history since modern elections began in 1918. We’ve had some exciting votes, from the closer than expected result of 2010 to the transformational victories of Clement Attlee, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair in 1945, 1979 and 1997. But I’ve known nothing like 2017 in the dozen elections I have lived through since February 1974 for sheer unpredictability, drama and emotion . Ted Heath’s February 1974 general election, extraordinary in itself, provides the best mirror through which to view the utterly historic events of the last 36 hours. In both February 1974 and this time, Conservative Prime Ministers who were ill at ease with themselves and not natural communicators called a general election that they need not have triggered only to see it backfire disastrously against them and their party, leaving the country in a desperately vulnerable position at a time of great national need. Probe a little deeper, … [Read more...] about This has been the most extraordinary General Election since 1918
